NKY Freshman Small Schools

Featured Replies

How do you think the small schools will do this year against each other? What players do we need to look out for this year?

Week of Sept 3 Schedule

Holy Cross at Lloyd

Scott at Holmes

NCC at Cooper

Beechwood at Newport

Also Bellevue and Dayton.

I think we will have to wait for a couple of weeks of games to really have any idea. However, I can tell you that Lloyd had to cancel their season. They weren't able to get enough players to field a team. I also heard Newport only has about 15 kids so they are running tight on numbers also. It is too early to say who has what IMO.

Bellevue and Dayton do not play a freshmen schedule.

Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Bishop Brossart, Walton Verona, and I think Bracken County play a 9th and 10th grade schedule.

I also heard that Beechwood numbers are down also.

Also Bellevue and Dayton.

Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow and the other 1A schools besides Beechwood have their own conference separate from the one referred to in this thread. My understanding is those teams actually have freshmen and sophomores on their "Freshman" team to ensure they have enough players to field a team every year.

Since you appear to be familiar with what these schools do, how do they handle JV teams? Do they allow players to play both JV and on the 9/10 team?

Pete Collopy and Nick Seibert for NCC are both good athletes.

I do not think that the single A schools play a JV game except Beeechwood, but I could be wrong.

Hmmm. OK. That makes sense. Although Beechwood does have a JV game against Walton on their schedule. So maybe Walton only has freshmen on their 9/10 team?

Sadly I have already seen several 4'10" baby-faced 'Freshmen' suited up against 6' 190-pounders. This is not a contest, its a slaughter and WAY to dangerous for the little guys! That's why PeeWee football exists.

Parents and coaches - don't push your 12 & 13-yr-olds into a high school program if they are not at least in 9th grade or physically ready to survive, no matter how short of players your program might be. The goal should be to have your kid playing when he's 17, not trying to overcome the nightmares of getting trampled by 'adults' while still a child.

Pretty sure Newport will have a few 8th graders move up and help the frosh out numbers wise because they dont have very many at all.

I really think Scott shouldn't be playing in the small school league. Scott is a 5A school and should be playing with the big boys. Now I understand Scott doesn't have the talent like the bigger schools (or even some of the small schools) but by playing better competition they will only get better and it makes sense for them to play schools that are more closely associated with their own class. By playing these small schools like this at an early age they are setting themselves up to underachieve when the kids become juniors and seniors. Thats just my opinion on the situation.

Newport only had 12 players when they scrimmaged Scott. I thought that when school started, they may be able to add a couple kids. From what I've been told, they have not been able to. I hope they make it through the whole season.
