Texas High Schools vs KY High Schools

Featured Replies

KY has about 240 to 250 high school football teams.

TX has 255 schools......that have enrollment of over 2000.

50 schools have enrollment of 4000+.

Football is king down there and treated as such!

I had no idea the difference between the size of schools in the two states.

Yes and they only have 5 classes but here in KY we need 6 :idunno: but that's probably :deadhorse:

^ Exactly.

Texas gets 34 Electoral College votes. Kentucky gets 8.

What's your point?

Yes there are five classes in Texas, but they break down a bit in the playoffs. Class 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A each have 32 districts. The top four teams in each district make the playoffs. The two biggest schools (per enrollment) go into Division I and the two smaller schools go into Division II. So technically 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A break down into 8 classes.

Then there are also three classes of 1A: 11-man football, 6-man Division I, and 6-man Division II.

So realistically speaking, Texas has 11 classes of football.

Is there always a point? Or can there be an interesting note instead.

Some, including myself, may find it interesting and noteworthy that one state has the number of schools with more than 2000 students that another state has in its entirety.

Others, like yourself , may not.

A guy I used to coach with had a saying posted in his office that read There's two sports in Texas, football and spring football.

The article in USA Today said that schools are growing at a rapid rate due to TX economy being strong.

Cyde, do you, or does anyone else, know the size disparity (on a percentage basis) between the smallest and largest school in each of the Texas classes?

5A District 9 has the smallest school in 5A with 1800 kids and it also has the largest 5A school with 5100.

Apparently, I was looking for something other than the obvious.

Yes, I agree its interesting to note the sheer numbers of schools/ students and players in Texas. I lived in Houston for while and football is definitely king in that state. Living in Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania too (all great football states), not even Florida compares to the interest found in Texas when it comes to high school football.
