How does Mercer County compare to last year's team? Are they better? Supposed to be better?

 

About the only thing I have to go on is that Mercer County lost to Letcher Central in the playoffs last year and Breathitt, from what I've heard, fared quite well against Letcher in their scrimmage. Who knows how much to make of a common opponent from the playoffs the year before vs. a pre-season scrimmage the following year?

 

I expect Breathitt to win by a couple of TD's at least. But, you never know. It's the first game of the season, so there's a lot of unknowns.

Letcher Central is/was better last season by 2-3 touchdowns, than they are now, IMO. Mercer County will be better than last year based on returners but they are basically unknown with the new coach. Like someone earlier compared them to Louisville Central because of speed, if that is what your getting at, then Mercer County would've gotten beaten badly by Central last year, they weren't in that league at all.

I don't even see this game being close. Mercer couldn't stop #12 from Danville in their scrimmage and I can't see any way that they can stop Fugate. Sad to say it but I believe the Titans take it on the chin and other areas in this one. 40 to 7 might be too kind.

Agree. Breathitt will roll in this one. From what I have heard and seen of Fugate, Mercer will not have an answer for him all game long.

Danville is consistently one of the best teams in the state. And as many mistakes Mercer made in their scrimmage and they still tied the game just shows how talented they are. I think that if Mercer can keep them to two touchdowns they can win the game.

I got nothing but love for Mercer County, but they will not have an answer for Channing Fugate. He is likely to single handedly beat Mercer County. Mercer County is young and all last week's scrimmage did was raise more questions. I think Mercer County will be a better team when district play starts, but I expect Breathitt County to win this one going away.

Mercer County is still transitioning to the new coach, IMO. They had a hard time gaining yardage on the ground last week against Danville. They have a talented receiver in Jamel Taylor. He will jump over any and everyone who tries to cover him this year. he also has great speed. Overall, I really didn't see blazing speed from Mercer County, but after watching Cory Jackson run for Mercer in 2006, everybody looks slow to me. There are a lot of unknowns for Mercer County going into week 0, but I wish them luck. For now, I'd say Mercer County is about the same as they were last year.

If this were game 10 and Mercer was well into their new system I would give them a pretty good shot. But it's not, it's game one against a talented well coached team that knows their system and executes well. Mercer will try to control the ball as much as possible, use the clock, and keep the Breathitt offense off the field as much as possible. Fugate will have to earn his yards. In the end I think it will be closer than a lot of folks anticipate, but Breathitt by 2 TDs is what I expect.

I assumed LCC was better last year. But, I wasn't sure what was expected of Mercer County...they finished 6-6, but that was against some tough competition. Just wondering. It's a good test for both teams to start the season, IMO.

Breathitt's defense, at least based on last season, can be moved on. If Mercer can establish their ground game, they could move the ball and control clock. I'll be interested to see how it plays out...I'm looking (hoping) to see some improvement in the Bobcats defense. It wasn't bad last year by any means, but I'd like to see them raise it another level.

If Mercer can establish a run game they will win. IMO Breathit is not a good defensive team. Mercer will try to take away Fugate and make the rest beat them which I don't think they can.
