Voice of Reason Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Conner travels to Beechwood for a scrimmage Friday night at 7:30. It will be a chance for Beechwood fans to see one of the best QB's in the state in Conner's Nick West. This scrimmage will be played under "game rules" as Conner opens their season next week. Anyone have thoughts on what to expect in this scrimmage?
Voice of Reason Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 I guess I will just have my own little thread here. But in case anyone is interested. Conner varsity over Beechwood varsity 21-17. Conner's second scrimmage I believe and their first game is next week so they wanted to play actual game rules except no returns on kickoffs and punts. Both team's kickers looked good, with Conner's kicker putting two kickoffs in the end zone. First half, Beechwood led 10-7. Rigdon outplayed West and I was wondering where the West I heard so much about was. West looked better running the ball than throwing. Second half, West and Pugh showed why they are highly rated. Pugh had a nice long TD run. West got it in gear and made some nice throws, especially on one quick slant pattern where the ball hit the receiver in the numbers two steps out of his break. That was a throw you see on Sunday afternoons. Beechwood 1st team backfield and receivers played the first series in the second half and then took the rest of the night off. I would say the most impressive thing about West tonight was his poise and command of the offense. They ran a lot out of the shotgun and West checked off and audibled several times after reading the defense. Overall, a well played scrimmage and both coaches are probably pleased with most of what they saw. Beechwood JV handled Conner JV pretty well. Freshmen teams played a scoreless stalemate.
gchs_uk9 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I think Conner has a chance to make a run this year, much like Ryle in 2006 and Simon Kenton last year. They should have a really nice team.

They should have a really nice team. I think they need to find another receiver or two. I saw several dropped balls tonight. West is very good. Pugh is very good. The fullback, #41 tonight, will flat run you over. Line seemed pretty solid. Defense may need some work. But they definitely have the potential for a deep playoff season.

How does this Conner team rate compared to the two teams that went undefeated in 2003 and 2004?
Voice of Reason Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 How does this Conner team rate compared to the two teams that went undefeated in 2003 and 2004? I didn't see those two teams so I can't help you with that one. From what I recall though, those teams were led by a real good QB and they have that in common. The way Conner ran offense tonight, everything revolves around the QB - playcalling, option plays and good decisions in the passing game.
Clyde Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I guess I will just have my own little thread here. But in case anyone is interested. Conner varsity over Beechwood varsity 21-17. Conner's second scrimmage I believe and their first game is next week If they are playing next week they can only have a total of one scrimmage.
gchs_uk9 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 If they are playing next week they can only have a total of one scrimmage. Conner opens next week with Oldham County. Beechwood plays at Dixie Heights on August 28.
Voice of Reason Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 If they are playing next week they can only have a total of one scrimmage. Thanks for that clarification, Clyde. Beechwood's first game is the 29th and it is not at Dixie. It is the first game of the Skyline Showdown that Saturday at Noon at Nippert Stadium. As to Conner's game next week, I believe it is North Oldham. Please correct me if I am wrong. I thought that is what someone said last night.
footballhd Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Conner plays Oldham County at South Oldham High School
Clyde Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Conner plays Oldham County, @ North Oldham HS. Conner plays Oldham County at South Oldham High School Or do they play South Oldham in Louisville??
doubledeuce Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I think they need to find another receiver or two. I saw several dropped balls tonight. West is very good. Pugh is very good. NEERFAN Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Conner plays Oldham County at South Oldham High School This is correct.
Voice of Reason Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 There were zero drops. OK, then we will call those balls that hit the turf bad passes by West.
