Clyde Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 When you think back on individuals that had to be brave who stands out? James Meredith?
Mack The Knife Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 The soldiers who stormed Normandy on June 6, 1944.
ladiesbballcoach Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 The astronauts. Firemen that race into a burning building. Police officers approaching a possible violent situation. Mothers choosing to carry and raise their child when the father has abandoned them. Rosa Parks and any other Civil Rights figure who knew that them speaking out might mean them being lynched by cowardly stupid individuals.
ladiesbballcoach Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 When you think back on individuals that had to be brave who stands out? James Meredith? Who is James Meredith?
Clyde Posted August 9, 2009 Author Posted August 9, 2009 Let me rephrase. Obviously, fire/police/military folks are more than brave. No brainer. My question is aimed more at one person at one single time in history. James Meredith entering Ole Miss in 1962 as the ONLY black student in the deep south when the governor reneged on his promise to President Kennedy to allow him to enroll has to be one of those acts of courage. Can you imagine it? I can't. That's the type of example I'm talking about.
Clyde Posted August 9, 2009 Author Posted August 9, 2009 On a lighter note as David Brenner once said, the guy that saw a cow and told his buddy "I'm going to drink whatever comes out of that thing" was very brave.
Dlbdonn Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Who is James Meredith? you have got to be kidding , Meredith was the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962 ,
Birdsfan Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 You have got to be kidding. Meredith was the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962.Hate to admit it, but I thought maybe he was one of the Pilgrims.
ladiesbballcoach Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 you have got to be kidding , Meredith was the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962 , Didn't know the name. But know the act.
ladiesbballcoach Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Not sure of the names and I am sure some on here will be able to recite them, but the astronauts who climbed into the capsule after the one burnt on the launching pad.

Can you imagine it? I can't. That's the type of example I'm talking about. I can visualize myself doing a lot of dangerous acts given the right moment. (Many I may back down from if Im actually faced with the situation). There is no way I could ever conceive the idea of me even attempting his actions.:thumb:
Birdsfan Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Not sure of the names and I am sure some on here will be able to recite them, but the astronauts who climbed into the capsule after the one burnt on the launching pad. That would be Apollo 7: Walter Schirra, Jr., Donn Eisele, and Walter Cunningham. It was the first manned Apollo mission.
