James Jones transfers to Belleuve

Featured Replies

Jones has lived in Dayton the past few years. I've driven him to his house several times. I would assume he wants to play for Bellevue because he's dissatisfied with the baseball program at Dayton. I am sure if he is transferring to Bellevue, it is based on a legitimate move, as Coach Sanders is not going to put his program at risk playing an ineligible player.

Very well said Cooperstown!

I believe that Old Guy nor anyone should worry about this situation. While there are schools that end up having players from out of district, Sanders crosses his t's and dots his i's. With a coach as ethical and as experienced as he, there will be nothing inappropriate with any player at Bellevue. He wouldn't dare risk the season for his players or the progam.

You are correct about Sanders being a standup guy! He is one of the good guys that I would want my son to play for (If I had a son and btw he knows that) but if you don't think that someone from the KHSAA doesn't reads BGP's or such like bullentin boards, then I have a bridge to sell you.

My concern was the poster stating that "he" is moving implies that the family is not and that could send up a red flag and have the KHSAA come a calling whether there is a problem or not!

My second comment was just me wondering what would happen if a kid who was 18 decided to move out of his district without his parents moving!

The bold bothers me a bit!

If it were his family is moving, you would think that the poster would have stated that, "they are moving", but BB#21 is saying that he is moving! There is a huge difference between if he alone is moving to Bellevue, or if the family is moving to Bellevue! You just might see the KHSAA get involved!

Just curious but what would the ruling be for an example if the young man is 18 (by definition; he is an adult) and he decides to move out of the family home to another home out of the district, but his family stays put. Now he is an adult, with all the rights of an adult, and that includes choosing to live where he wants to. Anyone?

Regardless of whether he's 18 or not, the issue is whether he alone (or his entire family for that matter) move for legitimate reasons or whether the move in part is motivated to play for another school. Seems there would be many variables for the KHSAA to look at...1. Was there a change for better or worse in the family's finances that prompted the move, ie downsizing or upsizing home(point for no penalty)2. Change in jobs of Mom or Dad that prompted the move, ie getting closer to work(point for being bona fide) 3. Change in family size, addding or substracting kids or other dependents, that prompted the move(point for being bona fide) 4. Factors 1 thru 3 are not present and the kid is really good playing in a weak program and wants to transfer to a stronger program because he's "dissatisfied" where he's at(point for not being a bona fide change of residence. 5. Factors 1 thru 3 are not present, family is not moving but junior wants to live with "Uncle Bob" his senior year and attend a school that has a better program(point for not being bona fide). Obviously a lot of gray area and wiggle room in trying to deterime what someone's intent or true motivation is in moving....which is why I would prefer they abolish the sit out penalty and give kids one chance to transfer without penalty for any reason without any questions being asked.

I have definitely thought about this for college scholarships--the coach can basically leave at anytime, but the student cannot do so without penalty (except to transfer down in division). But this is a great idea. Why not give the student and family one redo. Maybe the high school choice didn't go the way that they planned, that the fit wasn't as good as they perceived before the student started school.

Please, we have enough of a problem with transfers without making it easier. I think the residency rule does a pretty good job of controlling this. With today's AAU and select teams, if you are talented enough to get to the next level there are plenty of opportunities to be seen. If you are truly good enough, they will find you. Hunter Jones is clearly proving that point.

I don't necessarily think it would be better, because I'm not sure. But, there are several states that allow one transfer without penalty. I know it would be abused, but I could see the argument if a student/athlete was at a school that say, was put under academic probation wanting to transfer, or a student/athlete at a school that was having violence issues or drug issues.

I have often thought that if a school is put under state control, the student/athletes should be able to transfer without penalty.

Just a thought.

I agree with this.

Voice,

You say we have "enough of a problem with transfers without making it easier"... What exactly is the problem with transfers we have right now? Not every school district has residency boundaries.
