A Question for Ohio State Fans

I consider myself a pretty big College Football fan, I actually like the sport better than any other, but for the life of me don't understand one thing, and I think some on here could help me.

What's the deal with Ohio State getting so much pre-season love this year? They lost Beanie Wells, Laurinaitus, Alex Boone, Marcus Freeman, Brain Robiskie, Brian Hartline and Malcolm Jenkins. They are quite young everywhere, especially the secondary where I think only Chekwa has started out of the DB's back.

I'm not trying to start an argument but it seems crazy to me that the Buckeyes are ranked ahead of Penn State-who lost a lot too, but also returned more than OSU. I have no problem with them being ranked anywhere between 8-12 -I think Cats 3x and I had them at #12, but I don't think they are top 6 or 7 like many have them. Is Terrelle Pryor really that good?

I hate OSU but I read an article stating that perhaps losing those players was a good thing- apparently, after the last game, there was a standoff between Pryor and the young guys and some senior safety (not sure who) and the vets because the older guys were proud of the team, but Pryor thought anything short of a championship was nothing to celebrate. One of the few seniors for this year's squad said it seems like there is a completely new culture in Columbus....

Well I don't think Pryor will be celebrating anytime during his stay in Columbus then.

I don't think that you lose the kind of guys they lost and get better. I just don't see it. I know people really like Herron, but obviously he is no Beanie Wells. The LB core will have to take at least a small step back. UF, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Bama, Ole Miss all seem better to me. I think LSU will end up being better and possibly so will Penn State.

Yes Pryor is that good. He is going to be a great college QB hopefully starting this year but may not be an NFL QB. OSU has had a top 5-15 recruiting class over the last 3-4 years. And most of the players which have graduated are the ones everyone labeled as "slow."

I think the LB core will be faster and OSU has some really good lineman. Pretty deep at defensive end although im a little concerned with secondary but there is experience there. Thomas, Posey, Small, a whole lot of speed at WR. Stoneburner will be a pass catching TE.

OSU offense will display the pistol formation and the single wing formation to take advantage of the athleticism on O.

Overall I believe it is a more athletic team but their probably a year away from a title contender. Next year OSU will be very strong. This year should be fun though.

Thanks for the answer man, I have no doubts that Tressel will have the Buckeyes winning 10-11 games, in the top 10 and competing for a Big 10 title. But I think that's as far as they will go. We've been hearing the: "this team will be faster than years previous" line for the past few years, but we still haven't seen it. They dominate the Big 10-which isn't exactly the SEC in terms of speed and athleticism-but when they go outside of their conference and play teams that have great speed and athleticism-USC, LSU, Florida-they come up short and sometimes get embarrased.

I think that with the recruiting classes that Tressel has brought in the past few years, especially last year, that we may see Ohio State become a faster and more athletic team. I think that Pryor will be a solid college QB, but I'm not quite ready to say he's a Heisman contender, he has excellent athleticism and a set of wheels that aren't easily matched, but he isn't a very polished passer, I saw him struggle to complete simple five yard slants he is just a Freshman so maybe that will come. Coach Siciliano is a good QB's coach and Bollman has shown that he can tailor the offense to bring out the best in his skill players, so possibly he will be able to do that this season.

^ This team will be faster. OSU is changing recruiting. Guys like Laurenitis who I loved were slow and couldn't get off blocks. Rolle and Sabino FL boys (linebackers this year) will change things.

OSU just signed a WR from FL this week. He had 30 offers, including 6 SEC schools, FSU, Oregon, and WV and he is coming to Columbus. Things are changing.

Sorry I don't think OSU will really be a legit title contender any time soon. They don't have the speed. Pryor really isn't even as fast as he looks, he plays in the slowest of the BCS conferences. And he cannot pass at all, judging from last year. He may improve leaps and bounds this year and in the future, but I don't think it will be enough.

He isn't as fast as he looks? Strength and conditioning coach Eric Lichter recently timed Pryor's 40 yard dash at 4.33. How many other QB's in college are that fast?

If he couldn’t pass at all he wouldn’t be playing QB at one of the top college programs in the country. Your distaste and hatred of Ohio State is evident, but give the guy a little credit.

Shaun King of ESPN's College Football Live was quoted as saying that QB Terrelle Pryor was an "alpha-athlete," and a recent piece of news might have just confirmed it.

Strength and conditioning coach Eric Lichter deemed Pryor as the fastest Buckeye with a reported 40-yard dash time of 4.33. That is not a misprint.

It's not too typical that your quarterback is faster than the defensive backs and wide receivers on your team. Then again, Pryor is not your typical dual-threat at 6'6'' and 240 pounds.

All teams report their players as faster than they are. Percy Harvin was reported to run in the 4.2's, but only clocked a 4.4 (multiple times) during his workouts for the pros. Are you telling me that Pryor is faster than Harvin or anywhere near as fast? All these OSU players have these great 40 times, but then when they play a team that is really athletic they look very slow.

I would say 4.5 would be generous for Pryor. A QB with 4.33 speed would set records in the BIG 10. Robert Griffin is worlds faster than Pryor and he isn't reported to have 4.33 (though I think he's close to that). I also think that when healthy Tyrod Taylor is faster than Pryor, and McCoy really doesn't seem much slower than Pryor.

No way does he run a 4.3 or 4.4. The results would show that on the field.

I guess all the publications on the web are a lie then. Also, when McCoy and Taylor are running the defenders aren't trying to take someone down who is 6'6" 240lbs but im sure you already factored that into writing Pryor off. Pryor is one of the top athletes in all of sports. He could be a starting QB or Forward or any college football or basketball team.

You seem to be really reaching by disagreeing with everything and everybody. There is other opinions and info out there that is as good or better than yours. :idunno:

I'm not purposely disagreeing with anyone. I have my own opinions, many of which go against common thinking so obviously people are going to disagree with what I say. I just think that alot of the spoken opinions are too generic and influenced by the media and things like that.

As for Pryor, who's a player I really like, I don't think that he's as good as he is built up to be, especially OSU fans obviously.

And my opinion would count as well as everyone else's because this is a discussion. Just because our opinions are differnt on a few things doesn't mean that I am picking on you or just trying to disagree for the shake of disagreeing.
