There is not discussion. There is ridiculing of another's opinions.

Alright then. What is your solution to help our horse industry compete with the states that are supplementing their purses with revenue from expanded gaming at the tracks?

You say you have a right to your opinion but shouldn't everyone have a right to choose whether to gamble or not? What's the difference?

That is more or less my question.

There is not discussion. There is ridiculing of another's opinions.

To each his own. I think that posters are taking the princples that you have stated as the reasoning behind your opinion, and applying it to other situations to show the weakness in the argument. It is not an attack on your credibility or integrity nor is it meant to be ridiculing- just trying to frame why the logic of "it's bad so government should ban it" doesn't necessarily make sense. Even great political philosophers and theologians like Aquinas have said that government shouldn't ban every vice.

I have spent zero amount of my life comtemplating a solution to the horse industries problem.

But let me ask you if you see your neighbors running off to make a poor economic decision to short-term set their financial records right, would you run off and do the same thing?

In the 80's we were told that the Lottery was the solution to funding education. How has that worked out?

This is a simple very short-term, knee-jerk, emotional reaction that does NOTHING to solve the problem with the horse industry.

What I want is things in place to LONG-term address the solution and not something that we are going to have to revisit every 3-5 years and find another solution to it.

Your assumption is that my principles would stand the same for all and every situation. I can't say that they will.

In this case of gambling, I don't think it solves anything and creates problems and costs that will be long costing the state of KY after any financial benefits of gambling has run it's course and we are looking for the NEXT financially saving solution.

This state and country is the family that has financial problems and we keep trying to solve them by getting part-time jobs and increase our revenue without ever addressing our spending. Right now, our family would have 52 part-time jobs to go along with our full-time job.

Everyone has a right to contact their legislators and make the opinion known.

If the legislators did not vote the way you like, don't vote for them next time and put into office someone that will represent the way you want.

I will respond in full later, but the point of this isn't to add jobs. The point is to keep the jobs we have in the horse industry from moving to areas that are more profitable for breeders.

It's about the jobs we have, not the jobs we are trying to create.

There are plenty of other states that have expanding gaming. If what you say is true then you should have no problem backing up your opinion with statistics from other states.

It is very important to me that we keep profits to going to those living in the huge houses in Central KY.:ohbrother:

I did that in a thread many months (maybe even a year) ago with stats that showed the problems other states have had and the rising costs to their budgets both locally and statewide.

I listed stats and studies and those on the other side, refuted them by saying, they weren't true. They didn't want to hear it because they wanted it and that was all that mattered.

I spent that time once and won't do it again.

Gambling is still a choice people have.

The question is do I want it in my backyard, so to speak. And my answer is no. If it is that person wants to do it, fine, let them CHOOSE to travel and to CHOOSE to gamble.

This argument is that you guys are furious that everyone is not bowing down to YOUR opinion and goodness sake might have a different opinion than the all-knowing gambling proponents.

I thought this was a society to make your own choices and I am reading on here that I AM NOT ALLOWED to make my choice to oppose gambling.

The EXACT thing those on here are railing about is the exact thing they are wanting us not to do. Have an opinion.

You are missing this point. Your opinion includes banning something many people enjoy doing that doesn't harm you.

For instance, I don't think people should go to church because religion isn't very good for people. I choose not to go to church...but I'm not saying that you shouldn't go to church. Church is just like gambling as it is something people enjoy doing with their time. The only difference is I don't choose to legislate how you live your life and you would prefer to legislate mine.

But honestly, I am ok with a solution that will keep gambling out of your community and can be allowed in the communities that want it. Your choice PREVENTS me from making my choice. You can be opposed to gambling and never have to do it.

It is very important to me that we keep profits to going to those living in the huge houses in Central KY.:ohbrother:
The people living in those huge houses create lots of jobs. But I guess people keeping their jobs is a bad thing to have in THESE TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES.

I am not banning anything. You want to go gambling, go gambling, you have that choice.

I complained once in the Private/public thread about the rural counties not have the things that the urban counties had. I was told by some from Louisville, that if I didn't like it, move to where those things are and quit whining about it. Sound advice, I guess, so in that vein, if it is so important to you to go gambling move to a state that has it.

And you have a choice to go gambling as much as your little heart desires.

The people living in those huge houses create lots of jobs. But I guess people keeping their jobs is a bad thing to have in THESE TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES.

I love them creating jobs. The post I responded to was about profitability. THat is money in the pockets of those million dollar homes. I don't care if they make 1 million instead of two million IN PROFIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if that poster wants to restate his post about something other than the rich being able to make more IN PROFITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
