What is his overall record at Holmes and overall as a head coach? This tells me more about how a coach does when talent levels aren't quite as high.

 

Disagree. Give me a guy that has a top program year in and year out. Holmes is 60-5 in the last two years, 85-10 in the last 3. In the championship game the last 2 years. Brought home the hardware this season. This record is beyond any we have ever seen in NKY. Henley is the best coach, and can be spoken of in all time terms in NKY.

I agree. Catholic and other private schools will often have more athletes per capita than most public schools.

 

I'm assuming you mean the % of athletes is higher at smaller schools (such as Covington Catholic & Newport Central Catholic) than at others?

 

Isn't that just a numbers game though?

 

Let's say you have the following teams: basketball (12 players), baseball (15 players), football (33 players), soccer (15 players), track & field (20 athletes), etc. etc.

 

I just listed 95 potential varsity athletes. Obviously the smaller schools are going to seem like they have "more athletes" when they have so many athletes with a much smaller enrollment.

It's not just talent.

 

Yes, I do think CCH has more talent. NCC perhaps not but closer than what you would probably say. School size is less relevant in basketball than any other sport. It still obviously matters because you get a bigger pool to pull from but when you only need a couple studs to make a team great, school size is not as big a factor in basketball.

Agreed. He is number 1 and everyone else is battling for 2nd. The problem to me is some of the better coaches may never get a chance to prove it. For example I believe Erik Goetz is an outstanding coach and knows a ton about the game of basketball and how to execute plays and sets. Does that show to a large amount of people? Probably not, b/c he has an almost impossible district to get out of every year. There are probably many coaches who have the same situation. They know the game, they know what they are doing, they just never have the players to execute it.

Shumate hands down. He beat the big schools while coaching at Beechwood. Thats impressive knocking off the likes of Conner, Highlands, Cov Cath, and Ashland in the AIT. :dancingpa

I guess Brannen of Newcath should be considered hands down too then since they beat Conner, Highlands, and Covcath....right?

 

Schumate is an up and coming coach here in nky but not of the same caliber as a Henley, Listerman, Hicks, or Faust.

New Cath has always been some what decent, this is Schumate's second year and he had the Beechwood Tigers in the regional tournament out of one of the hardest districts in the state!! Also Beechwood is a division three school.

Beechwood also had it's best team in school history....the year before they lost to Holmes by 25 in the first round of districts. Schumate is a good coach but the talent he had this past year wasn't too shabby either. We'll find out a lot about him and his team this coming year when they don't have players like Beuttel and Romes.

I think Bellevue new coach is going to be one of the best coachs in the 36th district.

One of the best in the 36th district? Well you have Brannen and Flynn at the top of the charts.

 

Never very impressed with Russell although I think T Diltz does a pretty decent job.

 

Lets let him coach a couple games first...................
