I'm not sure that simply buying a new townhouse / condo / house etc. would be all that is required. Numerous athletes have moved to new homes and were deemed ineligible to participate because their previous home had not sold. To receive the waiver it would have to be considered a legitimate change of address.

Usually when it is denied, it is when the KHSAA has determined it to not be "bona fide," ex. moving just to change schools.

I have never heard of it being based on whether a house has sold or not. But with the KHSAA it would not surprise me.

Three years ago a volleyball player from Mt. Notre Dame moved to Kentucky and attended St. Henry. They even bought a home in Boone County but had been unable to sell their existing home in Ohio. KHSAA ruled her ineligible at the beginning of the school year siting the fact that they still owned their home in Ohio. Ruling was finally overturned with one week left in volleyball season but she had not participated in enough matches to play in the post season.

Also, wasn't the Highlands football issue about 4 years ago, a problem because they still owned a home in Boone County and were renting in Ft. Thomas?

If someone wanted to get a "fresh start" and has had previous problems (regardless of who is at fault) .. I just can't see Coach Fookes as someone who is going to tolerate anything other than her expectations.

This probably sounds like I am passing blame or judgment ... that is not my intent.

But .. am I the only one that sees the irony here?

Watched her play some today here in L'ville at Summer Derby. NKY is "WELL" represented here! Boy is there a lot of great HS girls from across the country at this tourney!

Their "Cincy Heat" team (3-0) leaves tomorrow night for California tournament. Great game and they beat a Houston team by 1. Should be playing for a high finish tomorrow if they win the second game today.

All the local girls looked good when they were in.

KY Crush is here but haven't been able to get info or see them play.

Cutters (3-1) played great today winning both and playing for 9th - 10th tomorrow AM. Forget how many teams are here but there are a ton of them. They lost Tibbs at end of first game today with small ankle problem. Hope she'll be back tomorrow. Brown filled in great to help them beat Memphis team by 1 and move on tomorrow...

all had big day. Everyone playing real well. :dancingpa

I watched the Cincy Heat play their game last night. There were a bunch of college coaches (mostly head coaches) sitting courtside at this game. The Heat led the entire game, but couldn't close it out at the end and lost 69-66. They will play for 3rd place today in the most competitive division (32 teams) in the tournament...then fly out to LA.

Tibbs' ankle is ok. She played in their final game this morning. Cutter had a rough first half and could not get over the hump in the second half. They played much better but did end up losing. Overall it was a good tournament.

No.

The difference between Coach Fookes and some other coaches is that althouugh her expectations are high for hard work and dedication and it's her system that you will follow, is that she always shows compassion and care for her players. That's how she gets her girls to play hard for her. If you show you care about them as a person and other things (school, family) in their life, they will buy into your system and play hard for you. In return she works extremely hard to get her players scholarships.

Sounds like a great approach for a fresh start to me!

No irony here.

Good Luck Sydney!

Wish her the very best. We'll see. Only two things stand in the way right now... KHSAA and Sydney. Both have to do their part!

I saw article below posted on Cincinnati.com today about Sydney and Boone County.

"Boone County girls' basketball coach Nell Fookes said today that former Ryle basketball standout Sydney Moss is in the process of transferring to Boone.

"She's been approved by our pupil personnel to come to Boone County and all her papers are in the office," Fookes said.

As of last week, Moss (below) had yet to apply for a waiver from the KHSAA. Without that waiver, the sophomore-to-be would be ineligible for one year. Moss, who quit the Ryle team late last season, averaged 14.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a freshman. Boone County would be her third school in four years. She started her varsity career as a seventh-grader at Heritage Academy before transferring to Ryle prior to her eighth-grade year.

Fookes said she did not know if any paperwork had been filed with the KHSAA yet.

"If she becomes eligible to play basketball at Boone County, she'll go through the same process that everybody goes through," Fookes said. "Everything will be filed and checked. It's pretty strict."

Moss is the daughter of New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss.

I guess Boone County Schools are now open enrollment?

I guess Boone County Schools are now open enrollment?

Boone County Schools are not open enrollment so this is very confusing.

There are several kids attending BC schools outside of their district. I'm sure it's a case-by-case basis and each situation is judged accordingly. I'm only guessing, but I would say the issue went through the proper channels and was approved based on what was presented. It probably happens more than we know; however, since it's a high profile kid it will remain in the spotlight.
