June 11, 200917 yr I have always been big time into Boxing, is there anyone else on BGP that likes the sport?
June 11, 200917 yr I like the sport but I feel it's been on the decline for a while. Not many big stars our there in boxing right now.
June 11, 200917 yr Nothing is cooler than having a big party and getting the PPV event for a big boxing match. The sport is so corrupt and they have about 857 different belts that it has become the WWE.

The sport is so corrupt and they have about 857 different belts that it has become the WWE. I've always been a huge boxing fan and used to always get together with a buddy for PPV parties. But not so much anymore — there's just not really anybody to get excited about. The fractal nature of the governing bodies plays a big part in it. UFC/MMA or whatever else they call it just doesn't do it for me. It was far more interesting when it was a free-for-all, when you might see a 165-pound guy in the ring against a 400-pounder. I still recall some little guy jumping on the back of some fat dude and just bashing his skull in until he broke his hand. That, to me, is intriguing. Watching them wriggle around hugging each other on the mat just seems, well, gay to me.

Are you insinuating that because I practice brazilian jiu jitsu, I'm gay? Are all high school wrestlers gay? There are some boring MMA fights, yes. Some times people go with the "lay and pray" method where they lay on the other fighter and pray they win. But the majority of MMA fights are entertaining, even the ones that spend the majority of the time on the ground. Ground fighting is extremely technical and very difficult to master. MMA these days combines all the best combat sports. Boxing, muay thai kickboxing, jiu jitsu, judo, wrestling etc. It's a far better sport than Boxing has ever been IMO. Especially now that it is sanctioned. When it wasn't sanctioned it was just Royce Gracie destroying guys who had no clue what they were doing against a jiu jitsu guy. BTW if you want to see a great fight that spends a lot of time on the ground, watch Nick Diaz vs. Diego Sanchez. That was an awesome fight between two pretty good grapplers.

Quit using that lame-o retort that the soccer fans use. I can appreciate the athleticism and strategy involved in it. I'm just not into it. And yes, high school wrestling looks kind of gay to me as well. I have warmed up some to it over the past couple years, however. Just because I think it looks homoerotic doesn't mean I think the practitioners are actually gay. That's just silly, and you're speaking from emotion rather than logic. And it's not even close to what boxing was, especially in the '60s and '70s. It seems highly unlikely that any MMA guys will ever reach the superstar status that guys like Ali, Frazier, Robinson, Louis, Foreman, etc. enjoyed. Even today, as boxing is on the decline, nobody in MMA can claim to be as big a star as Oscar De La Hoya or Floyd Mayweather.

How can you expect someone to not retort with emotion when you call a sport they love "gay". It's pretty immature IMO. And if you seriously think it is sort of "gay" then no, you do not understand it. It's not a "lame-o retort". Should I call boxing gay since they hug each other every five seconds? They throw 2-3 punches, and clinch/hug. That doesn't mean that the sport is "gay" though. De La Hoya might be famous, but he's not very good anymore. He'll be gone soon, as will Mayweather. He's already retired 2-3 times hasn't he? MMA guys might never reach the stardom of Ali or Frazier, but not many athletes will. Regardless, Boxing will never be as popular as it was in those days IMO. MMA on the other hand, is steadily gaining popularity. I believe last year the UFC's PPV buys were better than both the WWE and Boxing.
June 11, 200917 yr You can respond to my last post if you want Jim, but I'll let this one die here for me and if I feel the need to respond again I'll take it to PM. Back to boxing. Doesn't Mayweather have a fight coming up with Juan Manuel Márquez? That one will probably end fairly quickly . J/K I don't expect Marquez to win though. I'd say Mayweather wins it pretty easily. I'd like to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao.
June 11, 200917 yr How can you expect someone to not retort with emotion when you call a sport they love "gay". It's pretty immature IMO. Point missed. I didn't say the sport itself was gay. Just that two sweaty men writhing around interlocked on the ground looks gay. And if you seriously think it is sort of "gay" then no, you do not understand it. It's not a "lame-o retort". Yes, it is a lame-o retort. You're offended that I don't see it the way you do. Rather than trying to see it the way I do, it's easier for you to just dismiss me as not understanding it. But the fact is, I do. Should I call boxing gay since they hug each other every five seconds? They throw 2-3 punches, and clinch/hug. That doesn't mean that the sport is "gay" though. A case can be made that boxing has some very homoerotic undertones. Football is a very homoerotic-looking sport as well (tight uniform pants, slapping each other on the butt after a good play, etc.). I can deal with those two, however, because I enjoy watching those sports more. De La Hoya might be famous, but he's not very good anymore. He'll be gone soon, as will Mayweather. He's already retired 2-3 times hasn't he? That the pair is at the end of their respective careers is immaterial. They're still bigger stars and far more recognizable figures by the average lay person than anyone in MMA. Otherwise, wouldn't guys like Chuck Liddell — who is probably the face of the sport — be getting big endorsement deals? MMA guys might never reach the stardom of Ali or Frazier, but not many athletes will. Regardless, Boxing will never be as popular as it was in those days IMO. MMA on the other hand, is steadily gaining popularity. I believe last year the UFC's PPV buys were better than both the WWE and Boxing. That's great that it's increasing in popularity. I never once said boxing is anywhere close to the status it once was.
June 11, 200917 yr I used to be a huge boxing fan growing up. Pryor vs Arguello Fight I being one of my alltime greatest fights I watched. Was a big fan of Ray Mancini, Hector Camacho, and the Hit Man Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard. I have not followed it for years and really do not know much as to what is going on in the boxing world. Any good website to kind of get updated on the champs?
June 11, 200917 yr Author I am a huge Floyd Mayweather fan, I can't wait for his fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. I hope that he and Manny Pacqiaou end up having a match, that would be one for the ages. As for MMA, I never have been able to get into it, too much like WWF for me-or WWE whatever it is now.

June 11, 200917 yr Author MMA is absolutely nothing like the WWE, how do you get that? It's guys in underwear grappling with each other, one's scripted, one's not. But then again, I've not watched wrestling since I was 8 or 9 and I've never watched MMA, but it just strikes me as similar.

Even today, as boxing is on the decline, nobody in MMA can claim to be as big a star as Oscar De La Hoya or Floyd Mayweather. You have to remember MMA has only been a sport for 16 years where boxing has been around for over 100 years. Its a really young sport still and there are so many people who dont know much about or know anything about it at all so todays MMA stars wont be nearly that big. You mentioned Chuck Liddell and yeah he is prolly the biggest star the sport has seen so far. In his prime days he was making around 9 million dollars a year which is outstanding for such a young sport. The MMA business model is really different from boxing's so it will be quite a while if ever that the MMA stars make what Boxings biggest guys do. Although the mid level and undercard fighters in MMA do make more then the boxing guys at those levels do.
