Here's a chart indicating (as of the end of 07) that male to male contact is the predominant singular cause of the spread of HIV. Just think of all the precautions that EMTs use when responding to an injury scene where blood is exposed; gloves, masks, etc. On the battlefield, folks do not have the time to take those precautions. You have to be willing to cover yourself in blood to care for your fellow soldier's, Marine's wounds. If gays are allowed to be in the service, in combat situations, it WILL adversely affect wound care on the battlefield and thus morale.

LN, surely you aren't implying that only homosexuals can have/transmit HIV? Wouldn't a bedhopping heterosexual be able to contract HIV and transmit the disease by one of the methods that you mentioned?

Intravaneous drug users and promiscous individuals are also highly likely to contract HIV. But...I guess in the "cleansed" military, there are no intravaneous drug using promiscuous soldiers.

How about moral in barracks then? I would be extremely uncomfortable with an openly gay man in a community shower with me or changing clothes etc. Maybe that make me narrow minded but before I get called that let me also say that I would be just as uncomfortable with a woman that I am not intimate with in that situation as well.

RM and TBG, I'm sorry I should have made it clearer for you. From what I know and have read, HIV can get transferred through blood. It isn't transferred as easily through blood as it is transferred through semen, but it can be transferred through blood. On the battle field there is blood all over the place. Open wounds of the injured soldiers and open wounds of the soldiers treating the more severely injured soldiers. Blood of others ends up in your mouth, in your eyes, everywhere on you.

 

I did not come close to saying that only homosexuals contract HIV, so there is no need for anyone to beg to differ on anything. I said that male to male sex was the greatest cause of transfer and that it was estimated to cause 47% of the transfers. 47% is not all and obviously implies that there are other causes that constitute 53% of the transfers. The use of contaminated needles by drug users is indeed another major cause of transfer. And trust me when I say this, having prosecuted and put plenty of drug using Marines in the brig for a long time, the Marines do not tolerate the use of drugs. Yes there are IV drug using Marines on active duty, but when we catch them, they aren't allowed like gays to just leave active duty; they go to the brig.
