Looks like the easy hire to me! Nothing against Welch or anything, but just looks like they made the easiest hire possible. Not meaning it to be negative or positive, just stating my opinion.

All of the complaints in the "who will be the coach" thread seemed to think South Laurel was doing fine offensively, but really struggling on defense. So they hired the defensive coordinator.:confused:

 

Good luck to Coach Welch and South Laurel. They have no reason not to be competitive in their district.

They don't appear to be interested in winning. Hire a proven loser, who might be a nice man. Already works there so they make minimal effort. If you want a nice man then hire a nice man but don't try to spin it as trying to win.

The top 5 programs in 5a wouldn't hire this guy would they? Highlands, Bowling green, John Hardin, Cov-Cath, Christian county. Could he get the head job at those schools. Is he going to be allowed to put together the same type staff? Are the facilities similar? How about the feeder program? I don't think South wants to match any of that.

Coach Welch was the head JV coach at Rockcastle 81 through 83. He is a very good football coach and even a better person. He cares about the kids and I know first hand as I was one of his players at ROCK.

Larry Welch is far from being a loser!! He has coached for several years at Rockcastle and I would not call the ROCK a loser. He had a couple of years as head coach and record was not the greatest but sometimes it it hard to win when you have mules and the other guy has racehorses. It is easy to coach when you have 5 to 8 D-1 players every year.

 

Proably would not apply or get any of the jobs you mentioned because he is not from that area and has no big name. Just because he does not speak at all your clinics does not mean that he could not coach at any of those schools.

 

As far as his defense, he was only DC at South for a year and got hired in very late in the summer.

 

Bottom line COACH WELCH I AM BEHIND YOU 100% AND AM A SOUTH LAUREL FAN NOW!!! Make'm do those killer squats coach.:thumb:

He actually was the NL head coach in the 2000 season as well. I had forgotten that he took over for Glenn Polly during the 1987 season at Laurel County. I think he may have stayed on the staff when Jack Eicher came in 1988, but I could be mistaken.

I am not sure what it was when he took over for Coach Polly at Laurel County, but I believe his record at North Laurel was 7-35. Les may have this exact number, but it was in that ball park. It was 5-26 his last 3 seasons. His 1998 team played a very tough schedule.

I have to agree! If he only had been Head coach for a couple years and was like 2-18 or something, then that is better than being head for 4-5 years and averaging 1 win a year. You have to be able to build something at a school in 3-4 years and start winning. Who knows though.

About 70% of Larry Welchs coaching experience has been at Rockcastle Co I would not call Rockcastle a proven loser. I bet that Coach Larkey and Coach Saylor would tell you that Larry Welch can coach football.

 

Alot of comments are made on here by people that do not always know ALL of the story. THen people take them as the whole truth. THere is alot of background on Larry Welch that not everyone on here knows. He was coaching football when alot of people on here were in diapers.

North Laurel is and always has been a football power and Coach Welch killed it. North Laurel where Coach Welch was head coach has had 2 winning seasons in the last 15 years and those two there record was 6-5 both years, There record in the last 11 years is 33-80. Do not think Coach Welch coached all of those teams.

They actually have had 3-4 winning records, but you are right, not a power by any stretch of the imagination. Duncum had 2 winning seasons (his final 2 seasons at NL) and they did have a district title in 1994 under either Harville or Mills. I do know that Welch had a few rough parents to deal with in his tenure at NL. Duncum got to experience that his first few seasons until he started to turn things around. I hope the parents at SL do the right thing and support him from the get go. If they tell their kids this was a bad choice and don't support him, he will be doomed from the get go. He MUST have their support right off the bat.

 

If Coach Welch gets to bring in his assistants and keep only a few from last year's staff (and I think he will based on what I am hearing), South Laurel can rebuild. Welch is a good man and a hard worker. I was surprised by the hire, but wish he and the Cardinals all the best. I hope they turn it around. The big thing will be bringing discipline back to South Laurel, and I believe he can do that. He has an excellent group of freshman coming up this season and the future can be bright at South Laurel. You are right that Larkey and Saylor would tell you that they absolutely loved coaching with Larry and they believe he can get the job done.

 

The parents and boosters at South Laurel need to get behind him now and support him as their head coach. Larry is the choice, and he needs their support now.

Sounds like to me you may be a coach that was past on the hire or one of the disgruntled coaches on the staff. JMO :thumb:
