MountainThunder Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Congrats to Larry and good luck! I know he will put in the effort to rebuilding the South Laurel program.
Tall Trees Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Congrats to Coach Welch!!! He is a very good man. I had the pleasure of having him as my JV coach about 30 years ago.:dancingpa
MountainThunder Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 Something I was told this morning is that several of the assistants from SL will not be retained. If this is accurate, it could be a very good thing for Coach Welch. He needs to be able to have his assistants to help him. Some of the issues last season went back to some of the assistants who quite frankly, should not have been on the staff. I certainly hope that Hays stays, ... the offense has never been a problem at SL.
pigman Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 MT that grandson sure is growing fast. Too bad you're not proud of him.
MountainThunder Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 MT that grandson sure is growing fast. Too bad you're not proud of him. Not a bit!!! He looks just like my son did at that age, but just much bigger and taller. 3 & 1/2 months old now. The doctor says that he is extremely healthy and appears that he will be a big boy. :thumb: Hoping that in about 14-15 years, he will be playing for Larkey or Welch!!!
pigman Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 We had one in March that weighs about 18 pounds now. We're pretty bummed they just moved to Tacoma with the Army.
shopsopen Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 After looking throught the other thread about South, I want to weigh in on Larry Welch. Having coached with him, and considering him to also be a good friend, I can say this was a great hire. Regardless of past performances as a head coach, Larry is like fine wine...... he gets better with age. The man knows football, he knows kids, and he knows winning. The other aspect that seperates the good from the great coaches is work ethic. Larry will out work his opponets because he knows that's what it takes to win at the highest level. He will be able to take kids with lesser talent and turn them into good high school football players because of his work. Let's not confuse his work ethic as just putting in time, but putting in time with a purpose year round to ensure growth in the program. Larry has shared so much wisdom with me about life and football that this time around I can not see how he could fail if he is left alone to coach his team his way. Good luck Larry.

I have no doubt that Larry will work his tail off to rebuild the program. And not bringing back some of the assistants from last year is really going to be a HUGE plus. Honestly, some of them were not mature enough to contain their emotions to be effective.

MountainThunder Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 MT, What is the background of Coach Welch? The exact chronology may be off and I know I am missing something as most of my knowledge of Larry comes from 1996 up. Others who know him better should have better information than I do. I believe he played for Glenn Polly at Rockcastle County years ago. Larry is a super guy and I hope he does a great job at South Laurel. Student assistant at EKU ??? Assistant & DC at Laurel County under Glenn Polly (not sure on seasons) Assistant at North Laurel after split (I believe) Head coach at North Laurel 1996-2000 seasons Assistant at Rockcastle Co 2001-2007 seasons (teaching at NL) DC at South Laurel 2008 HC at South Laurel 2009 - future
