I'm not sure what happened but the NKY Bulldogs were within 4 at the half and then benched their best player #5 for most of the second half???

 

I could not agree more. I was very suprised how many times Matt Trammell was taken out of games this weekend. It seemed like every time he got going he was pulled from the game. He scored 7 points in the first half against the Shining Star Sports team but played very little in the 2nd half.

Any info on the Hoop Dreams team with Tamron Manning and Jaylen Beckham on it?

 

I thought they were a huge favorite to win the 15u bracket. They got beat by a very good Derek Smith team in their first bracket play game. Anyone have any details?

DS17u took out the Kentucky players in an exciting game. DS fell behind by about 20 in the first half, only to come back and take about 8-10 point lead in the second half before Players tied it in regulation. DS won it on Justice layup at the buzzer in o/t. Ds got beat in the semifinals on a last second deep shot by Shaquille Wilson and I believe Shining Stars Mcfarland ended up winning it all. Most competitive tournament I have seen in awhile. Lot of good players in this class.

 

The Derek Smith vs KY Players game was one of the more exciting games of the weekend. Derek Smith won the game on an amazing move by Justice at the buzzer. He held the ball until about 5 seconds left in the overtime. He put a hesitation move on one of the Players defenders (undressed him) and layed it in at the buzzer to win it. Great game!!

DSAS defeated Shining Stars in the finals of the 16U tournament.

 

Derek Smith wins the 16u championship 64 to 58.

 

Remy Abbell of Eastern High School had 19 points and Timmy Knipp chipped in with 18 points.

 

Scott Schuette of Lexington Catholic had 14 points, 10 points from Neal Pawsatt of Mason County and 9 points from Luke King of Deming.

 

This was a fun game with a ton of talented young men. Very nice championship game.

 

Congrats to the Derek Smith team and Coach Davis. Well deserved!!

Decent first half but a blow out in the second half. Shining Star Sports ended up winning the game by 23 points.

 

Gilbert had 13 and Pawsatt had 12.

 

The biggest difference was the interior players. Trevon Brown of Boone County (10 points and 8 rebounds), Jake Geisler (8 points and 9 rebounds) of NCC and Zeke Pike of Dixie (9 points and 7 rebounds) had their way with the Bulldogs bigs. The Shining Star Sports big men held Hodges and Stauffer scoreless in the second half.

 

#24 for the Bulldogs, I believe his name is Barnett really impressed me. He has a nice three point shot and handles very well. I like his game.

Kudos to the Shining Star's bigs. I really thought this game would be decided on the perimeter.

Zach Barnett is from St. Henry. He has a really qucik release and runs the floor extremely well. At times he seems to have only one speed, but will continue to improve and will be a really good guard for St. Henry next year.

I didnt get a chance to see his number this year. I saw him in a few tournaments last summer and read some about him during the basketball season. Seems like a good young kid and wondered how he performed with the Storm and the 17's. He is about 6'5" or 6'6". Good player.

 

Gaines was #21, he had 27 pts vs team Kentucky! Could have played with Remy Abell with Derek Smith 16U, but chose to play up. Eastern will be in very good shape next year.:ylsuper:

Pike Played Good, Had a Solid tourney! He's only a Frosh but plays up a level in 16u he scored about 12 in the Semi Finals and about 10 against DSAS. He Plays his roll and is a strpng post player, can also step out and shoot some!

 

Gilbert and Pawset are also solid player along with Shuttee this Shining Stars team plays very well together and was an exciting game to Watch!

 

Pike is a good player. But, he is an older freshman. He is the same age or older then some of the kids he plays with and against.

Very glad to hear this. If this kid doesnt go somewhere and do really good things I would be very surprised.

 

In regards to the Shining Stars bigs, I would agree. They did a great job in the post. Though from a spectators perspective, it looked like the Bulldogs did have some kids (2 bigs) in foul trouble. I know that's part of the game, but Im sure it would be really tough for Stauffer to handle those 3 big guys. Nonetheless, Brown and Pike really impressed me. Pike's strength inside was a big asset and he could finish around the rim. Brown just has such a big body down low and can move people around. He also has a soft touch that allows him to put the ball in the hoop. Neal Pawsett really impressed me as well. He can really shoot it for a big. Mason County's future is bright with he and Gilbert. Gilbert seems like a really nice PG and he is quick.

 

Now in regards to the Bulldogs team, I agree that you cannot overlook the PG Flesch. Gilbert came out and scored 10 or 11 pts right out of the gate it seemed like, then when Flesch came in to guard him, he only scored 2 more pts. or some small number like that (this is a compliment to Flesch, as I know how good Gilbert really is). Not to mention, he has a unique ability to get to the rim and adjust his shot in the air.

 

I would also agree with the statement about the Hodges kid from Connor. I only saw him in the first half of the game against the Shining Stars, but he had a sweet dunk. It appeared that he got in foul trouble. I couldnt imagine him sitting for any other reason.

 

I have seen this Bulldogs team in a few tournaments this year, but they seem to have a good nucleus with Stauffer, Flesch, Trammel and Hodges. Barnett is also a unique player that can score in bunches and in a hurry.

 

And, the Shining Stars also have a really good core of players that can get after you. Kids like Gilbert, Schuette, and Pawsett. And they have a nice bench with guys like Brown and Pike. This team is very competitive and kudos to them for getting to the finals.

How was the matchup between Gilbert of Shining Stars and Shanklin of Derek Smith? Both are very talented point guards.

The NKY Bulldogs played tough in the tournament. I really thought the kids that played some varsity time this past season; Stauffer from Ryle, Trammel from Dixie and Hodges from Conner carried this team. I look forward to watching these 3 play this coming season in the 9th region!

I agree to a certain extent. But, you just cannot forget Flesch. This kid is the most talented defender for the NKY Bulldogs IMO. He also has the ability to score. I think this team is pretty stacked all around. IMO they are like a Shining Stars in their own right. Im learning more and more about them. I took a lot of time to get to know the Stars and DSAS and hope to do the same with the NKY Bulldogs.
