The first six fouls of the fourth quarter were called on LA and most of them were pretty ticky tacky. I honestly think the officials do a pretty good job at keeping things fairly equal.

 

The NBA is the toughest sport to officiate IMO. With so many possessions and calls that could go either way, it is difficult for there not to be bad calls that stick out in your mind.

 

For those of you saying that the stars get star treatment, name me a sport where that doesn't happen.

 

I agree w/ you somewhat. It is very difficult to call. What isn't difficult is assigning referees to games. Some refs shouldn't do some teams games. Pretty simple.

I have a personal bias against Kobe as I (1) cannot stand him, (2) think he's the most overrated player in NBA history, but the reason the elbow was called was no one saw it. There was a lot of congestion in the lane when it happened. No one else saw it before the replay was shown. I did think the referees last night were a little overboard, with the exception of Artest's ejection, they had to do that.

My thoughts on last night's game...

 

The officiating was inconsistent (at best). There were stretches where they seemed to heavily favor both teams, IMO. The start of the 4th (as you noted) certainly went for Houston, but other times went for LA.

 

It also seemed to me that they really let these two teams go at each other for a large part of the game. The surprising thing to me was that it seemed to benefit the Lakers last night.

 

The Kobe elbow was missed for sure, but Artest can't lose his composure like that in a big game. Houston still had a shot in that game until he blew up. They're not winning against the Lakers with him in the shower. He's been money in the first two games of this series.

 

And, finally, I'm still not pleased with the Lakers play. I'll wait and see how things play out before I tell you what I started thinking last night...

Tim Duncan gets more calls his way than almost anybody in the NBA...

If it happens in the NFL or MLB, I don't see it. I guarantee it's not as bad as it is in the NBA.

One of the greats. Top 10 most likely. Not the Jordan-clone unstoppable force of nature people make him out to be. Not top 5. Not better than LeBron. The Kobe love is sickening. Well he can play with the most Dominant Center of all-time and win titles, he can shoot the ball 62 times and score 81 points while having no assist, he is just unstoppable. He can alienate teammates and get a pass.

I think there is a fine line the NBA attempts (and needs) to toe, IMO. The stars market the league...the NBA should protect them to some extent, but they have to be careful not to go too far and impact the games too much with the star treatment.

 

Example: Often times on drives to the basket, multiple defenders will make contact...hypothetical...Paul Pierce attacks the basket, Dwight Howard and Hedo Terkoglu (sp?) both attempt to block the shot and make contact. The foul should be on Hedo. The league should try to keep the stars on the court.

 

At the same time, you have to draw a line concerning how far you can go.

^ I was going to say something about that as well, I really think they do a good job of being consistent with how they call foul/or not call fouls on star players. I mean honestly who wants to see Kobe and Lebron ride the bench the whole first half of a game? Now this is to a certain extent. These guys know what they can and can't get away with and they are smart enough to stay on the court. I don't really have a problem with any officiating I have seem thus far.
