"Republicans are 100% to blame for the US current problems."

Featured Replies

This is verbatim from a professor in class 5 minutes ago. That there is one group and one person only to blame for all problems within the US right now, The Republicans, and George W. Bush.

I thought seats were gonna start flying.

PSC, US foreign Policy in the Developing World.

Any good debate come of this ?

Aparently despite a system with Filibusters, and in which neither party has seemingly held all of the power, prior to now, all of the blame simply falls on one groups shoulders.

I know some will say professors shouldn't express their political preferences but I completely disagree. As long as the prof allows discussion to take place and doesn't silence those he/she disagrees with then who cares what one person's stance is? The important part is the debate. That's what college is for - to get your brain working and to be able to respond intelligently and logically with something other than "oh yeah? You suck."

No, not really. Well yes and no, even people who I know are hard core democrats were saying that you couldn't blame it only on one group completely. To which they were told they were naive and didn't want to hear "the truth". I felt like Jack Nicholson was in front of my class telling me "You can't handle the truth!"

With the influence and power a professor holds, I don't think their preferences should ever be evident. If it is, that in itself often limits debate as students are afraid of what might happen if they disagree.

This just goes to show you that anyone can be ignorant. That may be the best lesson you learn from this class.

Yes and no, Clyde.

While I am not objecting to the engaging of one's mind, most kids 18-21 are still just learning about the world and are very impressionable. Invoking views should be done with a great deal of caution, imo.

My only issue with professors expressing their political preference, is if they hold it against students who do the same. I once wrote a paper, and I'm a very good writer for the record, and because my view was on the other side of the fence of my teacher, my grade was affected. She wrote at the top, "I'm afraid most people do not share this perspective."

I would've walked out. The main reason I shy away from PSC classes is because the majority of them are the professors trying to force their own political agendas down everyone's throats. I'm old enough to form my own opinions.

That is a pretty extreme view, there is plenty of blame to go around about a lot of things, but in my opinion campaign contributions are the real reason the interests of everyday folks aren't addressed on both sides of the aisle. So until we have real campaign finance reform and term limits I can't see much changing. IMO
