I do. It seems clear he's pandering to the tree-huggers. While the current way most coal is extracted is regrettable, it still enables us in Kentucky and most of the nation to enjoy cheap electricity.

 

Like everything else, there's gotta be a middle ground somewhere.

I am general counsel for an electric cooperative. Certain regulations altered in the first three months that deal with capital credits, as well as certain new and unnecessary requirements dealing with scrubbers, will cause your electric bill to rise 40% over the next year alone.

 

Coal is not going anywhere; however, the cost of its usage will.

No way we can just keep on as we have been. CO2 is a problem and will continue to be a problem.

 

Do we invest in carbon sequestration? Very expensive. Prohibitive from a $$ standpoint. However, I think we are doing our grandchildren a disservice if we stick our head in the sand and just keep it as it because of its abundance and price.

Some coal companies are doing horrible because they chose to go spot market prices(Massey Energy, Appalchian Fuels, a few others.) Some are in great shape because they chose long-term contracts when spot market prices were ridiculous (ConSol, International Coal Group). All about the managment.

 

 

 

Clean coal tech is hear, but they have made the taxes and regulations on building new power plants so high that it is not feasable to build new.

Yes they are, but the BTU's in that coal is so bad, They choose to mix it with coal from the south eastern states....

I still have trouble reconciling the characterization of CO2 as a "problem" with it's absolute necessity for plant life.

And doesn't just about every animal on earth that breathes air exhale CO2?

I'm sorry If this topic has already been touched, I tried searching the Page and didn't see anything on this.

 

A coal company that I work, (Don't wanna say who) Pulled up a study on coal miners in the US, And showed that well over 900,000 people works in the coal industry. Basically ALL of Eastern Ky is coal mines, And that is how we make our living, What are we going to do If what Obama said, Comes into play? Not all, But guessing, 20% of miners don't hold a HS diploma, Jobs are much easier to come by in the central and western part of Kentucky.

 

Don't hold me to this, But I think I seen where 85% of the US energy, Comes from coal. Mines are starting to shut down, Cut back on pay and hours, Coal has hit rock bottom right now, Going from $135 a ton, to Nearly $40...I have a great job, with a company that has some real nice contracts locked in for the next 3 years, And as of right now, I have no worries when it comes to working, But what happens when I do? Will Obama give us a check for $3,500 a month? Or will I'll starve to death?
