Obama to "Bankrupt" Coal??

Featured Replies

I'm sorry If this topic has already been touched, I tried searching the Page and didn't see anything on this.

A coal company that I work, (Don't wanna say who) Pulled up a study on coal miners in the US, And showed that well over 900,000 people works in the coal industry. Basically ALL of Eastern Ky is coal mines, And that is how we make our living, What are we going to do If what Obama said, Comes into play? Not all, But guessing, 20% of miners don't hold a HS diploma, Jobs are much easier to come by in the central and western part of Kentucky.

Don't hold me to this, But I think I seen where 85% of the US energy, Comes from coal. Mines are starting to shut down, Cut back on pay and hours, Coal has hit rock bottom right now, Going from $135 a ton, to Nearly $40...I have a great job, with a company that has some real nice contracts locked in for the next 3 years, And as of right now, I have no worries when it comes to working, But what happens when I do? Will Obama give us a check for $3,500 a month? Or will I'll starve to death?

I'm trying to figure out is this because of Obama or the demands for coal or less demand? I confess I didn't watch the youtube segment.

I hope coal continues but I don't mean to sound mean, "EKY is not the only place where industries that have been around forever are dying." Try southside VA where the Textiles and Furniture that built our community are all but extinct and unemployment is at 20.2% last month. If the same happens to EKY I will hate that but it's not like you would be the only region that's been devestated by industry change and this economy. FWIW, our plants began shutting down just over 10 years ago.

Obama was on the record during the campaign saying he wanted to make the cost of using coal to produce energy so high that no one would use it.

What about the rest of us in that state that will see our electric bills double or triple. Will Obama give us another 20 dollar "stimulus" per check?

I, for one, can vouch that the coal business has come to a screeching halt. I work for a class 1 railroad, and people here are seriously worried. There is talk of cutting 7,000 jobs in our company system wide. Customer service and coal operations personel that I have talked to have said that this is the worst that they have seen the coal business in over 30 yrs. I really don't care who is to blame, I just want our business back. This goes for all American manufacturers, not just coal.

I know of many people, including one of my brothers and my best friend's husband, who have lost jobs recently, due to the economic crisis. Why wouldn't we expect to see the same thing in coal related industries?

So you have no issues with Obama's stance on coal?

You can control your utility usage to a certain point. I'm in charge of it for my company. Since we started our conservation project in January we've saved over $71,000 through March.

I've down the same thing at home and we've cut our electric bill from $220 in January down to $81 this month. A normal home in our area uses about 1,000 kwh a month. In January we used well over 2,000 kwh. Last month it was down to 1054.

That still isn't going to keep your bill from skyrocketing if Obama gets his way. Of course just like taxes I'm sure Obama will figure out a way that those nasty rich people can pay for those that "can't" afford to pay.

True, true but it will help some.

So is it in any way problematic to you?

And if companies have to pay more for their electricity I'm sure they'll just eat the loss and not pass the costs onto consumers.

How high was the inflation rate during the Carter administration?

So is it in any way problematic to you?

Absolutely, I don't like the idea of higher taxes on any one. If in the long run these hikes are short lived and the economy can pick back up then it is worth it. I think President Obama should make the tax cuts by President Bush permanent.

I think constantly about my children and grandchildren having to pay for this if things don't turn around.

Are we talking about the same thing? I'm referring to increased utility bills if Obama gets his way and puts into place a plan that will "bankrupt" coal burning utilities. His words not mine. That won't be short lived and it has nothing to do with the state of the economy as Obama was talikng about his cap and trade plans berfore the economy tanked.

I'm sorry I had the other thing on my mind.

I do think it will be a problem if the utility rates go sky high. If they do go as high as some predict there will be hell to pay for everyone.

Coal miners wouldn't be the only ones effected by this....It would go right down the line

This wouldn't hurt me bad, I'm a welder, So I have other opportunities...Just sad that we have all these people that wanna do away with coal, But yet, we have nothing to take its place at this time..
