Pulaski County new coach is Al Gover

Featured Replies

But they are at the top of the list, with Southwestern, Lincoln and perhaps Mercer. With that being said, Pulaski should at least be a regular contender for the 12th Region crown, something they haven't been in some time.

I'll assume your are talking basketball (although we could mention a softball title last year along with three team tennis titles in four years) and say never. Of course that isn't something that is oft-expected for the the 10-12th biggest school in the region that was playing in the All "A" Classic less than ten years ago.

And realistically, I simply stated Pulaski should have more basketball success and be drawing more quality applicants based on their enrollment. GCHS was never mentioned.

It was still a shot at Pulaski-if you can dish it out , then you should be able to take it!:p

He did ... and responded with a pretty good argument.

I didn't view it as a "shot."

It's a viable and very good question as to why their success isn't higher, especially compared to other schools.

Three district titles in four years is pretty good I would say.

Yes, three district titles in four years is good. And it's certainly something to be proud of. But I, along with many others around the 12th Region, think Pulaski County should be having more basketball success than they are. Not to beat the dead horse, but Pulaski County should annually be the 47th district favorite and no one should blink when they horde up titles. Simply looking at enrollment numbers...

1. Pulaski County - 1,158

2. Rockcastle County - 870 (75% of Pulaski's enrollment)

3. Casey County - 747 (65%)

4. Somerset - 480 (41%)

Do Enrollments Affect Titles?

Now let's have a look at the most recent enrollment numbers for the entire region, ranking them from largest to smallest:

1. Southwestern - 1,172

2. Pulaski County - 1,158

3. Lincoln County - 1,126

4. East Jessamine - 1,106

5. West Jessamine - 1,026

6. Mercer County - 996

7. Boyle County - 903

8. Rockcastle County - 870

9. McCreary Central - 869

10. Garrard County - 754

11. Casey County - 747

12. Wayne County - 733

13. Danville - 537

14. Somerset - 480

15. Monticello - 241

16. Burgin - 143

17. KSD - 59

Looking at all of those schools, who has been to the region since 1992 (the last trip by Pulaski County)?

-5 trips: Wayne County

-3 trips: Boyle County

-2 trips: Lincoln County

-1 trip: Casey County, Harrodsburg - closed, Mercer County, West Jessamine

Pulaski County Split - The Death Knell?

One could argue that Pulaski County High School has never recovered from the split of the schools back in the early 1990s. The Maroons have only won eight regional tournament games since that 1992 title. After back-to-back regional runner-up finishes in 1994 and 1995, they've only won three regional tournament games. That's three wins in fourteen years; this for a school that won, on average, nearly one regional tournament game each year between 1964 and 1992 (24 wins in 29 seasons).

Point being is that Pulaski just hasn't been Pulaski over the last two decades. They've been witness to Wayne County moving further ahead of their program, along with watching Boyle, Lincoln, McCreary, and West Jessamine pass them by in the 12th Region pecking order. For the second biggest school in the region, that shouldn't happen. And perhaps the reason that it has happened (and will keep happening) is the insistance of the athletic department in recycling head coaches from the glory days - something that has proven to be a long-term detriment to a once proud program.

Sounds like you should have applied for the job....you seem to have all the answers for their lack of success.

How has Southwestern done in the tournament since 92? From the table they are the largest in the 12th.

I don't have the information on me right now. I'll post on that this afternoon. I do believe they've lost twice in the regional final over the last few years.

What answers? If anything, I asked more questions! The only thing I can say with 100% accuracy is that their hiring practices have been a little odd over the last few years.

As for me applying, if that's your belief, you completely missed my point. I'm no coach, nor do I aspire to be. I'm just posting the thoughts several of my friends from all around the 12th Region have discussed over the last few years.

Makes Monticello's runs over the years look even more impressive due to small numbers. And didn't Burgin have a great year? I didnt realize each of those schools were that tiny.

Yes, Burgin went 17-8 this season, which was one of their best records in several years.

Monticello has struggled for several years and haven't won a regional tournament game since the championship in 1987, but the numbers game has always been against them. They usually are competitive, however. Does anyone know/remember what the enrollment (roughly) was when they won the region in '87?

Southwestern has been to the regional tournament six times in their history. I can't remember when Southwestern opened (maybe 1993), but they didn't go to the region until 1998. Of course they were in a death region with Pulaski, North and South Laurel, and Somerset.

Of their six trips, twice they've lost in the regional final (Boyle County, 1998 and again in 2006). Three other times they've went to the semifinals ('99, '00, and '07). Only once have they went to the region and lost their first game - last year against soon to be champion Lincoln County.

Thanks, I hadn't realized that they have gone six times since they opened.:thumb:
