April 19, 200917 yr First, to address the comment about too many intoxicated people at Hillbilly Days....really? Like Thunder isn't one of the biggest drunk-fests ever? That's all people I know talk about is going to Thunder and getting drunk down by the river. Until I moved from Pikeville to Lexington, I had never heard of Thunder. So when I asked people what Thunder was, I was told "it's where you get drunk and watch fireworks." Now, Hillbilly Days was started in 1977, Thunder was started in 1990 I believe, so Hillbilly Days has a claim on the timing. It was also started to benefit the Shriner's Hospital. Why should Hillbilly Days, who has been holding this event MUCH longer than Thunder, move the event? Thunder decided to take that time, not the other way around. Forgive me if I upset you with my comments. I have never been to Thunder, so you may be correct with your observation. I have, however, been to several Hillbilly Days (I have lived in Pike County on two different occasions). It just bothers me as to why, with this festival being formed for the charity that it was, do people feel the need to put on the shenanigans that they do? And to say that Hillbilly Days is a celebration of our heritage, as I have heard many say in the past, disturbs me to think that public drunkeness is something to be celebrated.

With the disparity in attendance, I'd say you are right that there are more people drinking and drunk @ Thunder. But, it's a very family-friendly event, overall.

As is Hillbilly Days, but I think it's a bit misleading to portray Hillbilly Days as a 3-day drunk-fest and not even mention that Thunder has lots of drinking as well.
April 19, 200917 yr As I said, I have never been to Thunder, so you are probably right on that account. As for trying to put down Hillbilly Days, I am not doing that either. I guess, since I was a transplant to the area, the whole thing was kind of a shock to me. I can see how as a kid, the festival would be a blast. I know my kids have had fun there. However, I can't tell you how many people that I saw getting arrested for goofy things. People doing burnouts on motorcycles in the middle of crowds, fighting, you name it. Granted, this probably happens at any big outdoor event, but as I have said, Hillbilly Days are the only ones that I have to draw comparison from.

April 21, 200917 yr The F22 was amazing... It is the only plane in the world that can move directions like that, it almost just floats at times then it's gone out of site in seconds.
