Honestly that 2009 Holmes team with Riley, D. Johnson/Housely, J. Johnson, R. Johnson, and Pittman was better than the 2008 team with Henderson, Avery, Pittman, R. Johnson, and J. Johnson. They lost Avery and Henderson but made it back to the state championship despite a tougher road to the finals compared to last year.

I also think this years' team was a better defensive team as well and if you look at the match ups this year compared to last, I like Holmes chances.

Holmes had nobody last year that could match up with Darius and Trevor because of their size. When you look at Holmes size across the board this year compared to last, I just don't think Mason Co would have been able to handle their size and athleticism. I'd even go as far as saying Pittman and R. Johnson were better this year as juniors than Miller and Setty were last year as seniors.

Are you serious?

I'm down with this list.

No way Pittman and R. Johnson are better this year than Miller as a Senior. Miller had greater basketball IQ and court awareness than either of these players. They may close the gap some by the time they are seniors, but they will never be as good.

The E.Pittman last year I was more impressed with than I was this year and probably had a lot to do with his demeanor on the court last year versus this year. Take nothing away from the kid, he flew out of nowhere last year and had an incredible state tournament and he had a darn good one this year but there are some things the young man needs to shore up. I believe he is a great talent, hopefully its not wasted.

Considering both Ricardo and Elijah have led their team to back to back state title games (despite losing 7 seniors from last year) and just won a state championship as juniors, that's a pretty bold statement to say they'll never be as good. Both made all tournament as sophs and juniors and Rico was just tournament MVP as a junior while averaging a double double through the first 3 rounds of the tournament. Miller was no doubt a stud but IMO Rico will end up being the better all around player. Look at Miller at this stage in his career (as a junior) compared to Rico and it's not even close.

Pittman on the other hand has way more overall talent...he just hasn't developed that work ethic yet that Miller had. The only area I'd give Miller an advantage in from last year is his ball handling and overall composure on the court. Other than that, Pittman is the better player both offensively and defensively. Too many times Miller let smaller defenders have big games against him. (Ferguson and Henderson come to mind)

Both have already accomplished more in their careers than Mr. Miller did in his entire high school career...and I have a feeling R. Johnson will surpass him next year when he wins Mr. Basketball and Holmes returns to the state tournament to defend their title.

Please realize these comments come from a neutral observer...not from a Mason Co or Holmes fan. My comments are unbiased as they come.

I agree 100%.

I would go back a few years more (I think 93 or 94) and take Breckinridge County over any of them! Best TEAM I have ever seen in the state tournament. Most talented was Fairdale with Jermaine Brown, Carlos Turner, and Maurice Morris. I know this isn't what the thread says but I had to throw it in.

What basis do people have for saying the 1996 Bulls were one of the best teams ever? Other than they had Michael Jordan...

You can't take players out, especially when they were the main reason that time was so good.

I agree that Scott Co. '07 would be there as well. But you can't deny that Mason '03 is up there.

That Mason Co. team that Warren Central beat in '04 was coming off of four overtimes in that tournament and was without their best defender and second best scorer in Wes Jones. If he had played in the tournament, they wouldn't have gone into all of those overtimes and would've at least played Warren Central closer, and probably beat them.

In the 2004 State tournament, Mason Co. was without two starters on the "03 team (Wes Jones and Nathan Myrick). This made them not as deep as they were in '03. If you have Wes Jones in 2004 the Royals would've been sitting with back to back titles.

It is odd that you acknowledge how much missing a player from Mason Co , changed the outcome of the games in the state tourney. But on the other hand will not acknowledge that GRC without Pervis and all the injuries we have suffered this year, could have changed the outcome of the regional tourney this year. Which is it? :idunno:

I agree on the Breckenridge team...they are one of my favorites.

How can you have 2009 Holmes ahead of 2008 Mason Co when they beat them in the finals the year they won it? And the 2009 team was without Arrez Henderson.

What basis do people have for Holmes being #1? Besides the fact that they are the most recent winner and freshest in our minds.

First off those guys were sophomores when they lost to Miller and Co. the year before. People do get better. I am sure Miller was a lot better each year at Mason...

Secondly what basis do people have for putting others at #1 over Holmes? I mean talent wise Holmes matches up with everyone. They have guys who might go to high D1 schools. I think this years Holmes team has a very strong argument for being the best out of the last ten years. My reasoning for it is because of their defense. I have always gone to all the state tournament since 2001, and Holmes was the best defensive team out of all those teams I saw. Their defense would be the reason why IMO they very well might be the best out of the last ten years. The 2003 Mason team that you talk about a lot would have a hard time scoring. Lofton would probably do his thing, but he would probably work harder than he had to against anyone in the 2003 tournament to do that. So that could have maybe made him a little off. I say there is 4 or 5 teams that could have a strong argument for being the best out of the last 10 years. So no reason to act like its crazy to suggest that Holmes might have been the best, because they definitely have as strong of an agrument as the other teams.

You were talking about the Region Finals :sssh:. Mason Co fans are talking about the state title.

So? What difference does that make? Point is..... a player missing from the team and players injuried and not getting to play or not 100%, can change the outcome of who wins. Is that right???

Or does it only matter if they play for Mason Co and not matter for other teams?

I have never said that Clark Co. didn't have injury problems. Have Pervis could've and probably would've made a difference.

Please don't put words in my mouth.

I'm just saying Mason Co had a chance at a State Title, I really don't think GRC could have won it this year.

Big Blue Insanity is wrong. I agree with you sunrise. If a key player is missing, it does make a difference, no matter the magnitude of the game.

That has nothing to do with anything and she didn't say that.

Well, at least you are consistent in your argument.

FWIW, I will acknowledge that Jones could have made a difference, but no one knows how much, and all these years later it still baffles me that most Mason County fans I encounter leave no room for doubt. It's not "we might have won" it's "we would have won."
