What basis do teams have for putting Mason County '03 #1? Other than they had Chris Lofton, who had a big performance and is revered by some as the best player never to play at Kentucky.

 

 

Scott County in '07 has the best record of any of these teams, correct? A very valid argument could be made for them.

 

Of the teams I have seen play, I would put Warren Central of '04 at the top. They had 2 very big, athletic forwards & solid guards. During that era, they were a staple at the state tournament & they beat Mason in '04 pretty handily in the state championship game. That Mason Co. team was the defending state champions and was thought to be the favorite.

 

What basis do people have for saying the 1996 Bulls were one of the best teams ever? Other than they had Michael Jordan...

 

You can't take players out, especially when they were the main reason that time was so good.

 

I agree that Scott Co. '07 would be there as well. But you can't deny that Mason '03 is up there.

 

That Mason Co. team that Warren Central beat in '04 was coming off of four overtimes in that tournament and was without their best defender and second best scorer in Wes Jones. If he had played in the tournament, they wouldn't have gone into all of those overtimes and would've at least played Warren Central closer, and probably beat them.

Also, they returned almost every player from the '03 title team.

 

In the 2004 State tournament, Mason Co. was without two starters on the "03 team (Wes Jones and Nathan Myrick). This made them not as deep as they were in '03. If you have Wes Jones in 2004 the Royals would've been sitting with back to back titles.

I still say '04 Dub-C is on up there... I'm confident they would've shut down that '03 Mason squad.

The weakest part of the overtime argument is that Warren Central played AFTER Mason County on Saturday morning. They played the 3OT game on Friday morning, giving them the maximum time they could have hoped for to rest from that. Meanwhile Warren Central played the late game on Friday, having less time to rest than CovCath. Then, yes, Mason County played 4 more minutes than Central that day, but they also had hours more rest as Warren Central played an entire game afterwards.

 

Wes Jones missed the tourney, but you have absolutely no way of knowing what impact he makes. You can't unequivocally say he makes up 10 points.

On the basis that if you take Chris Lofton off that team they really were not as great as everyone made them out to be. You take one player out of the Warren Central line up and they still had a pretty good team.

 

4 overtimes... yada yada yada. Had they beaten teams like they were supposed too (such as Warren Central did), then they wouldn't have had to worry about 4 OT's.

Did you totally skip over his post? Essentially, Mason had more rest then Warren Central. And in some peoples opinions played harder competition later in the tournament (Cov. Cath).

Well, as I said, you can't unequivocally say Wes Jones makes up 10 points in the championship game. Of all the arguments, his absence is the only one that has any merit whatsoever, but there are so many ifs as to exactly what a player would've added.

 

And no, as far as I'm concerned, the 16 minutes doesn't matter. Certainly the four on Saturday don't. I can tell you I'd switch places every day, taking the OT on Saturday morning and having my opponent play an entire game while I'm at the hotel.

 

The 3OT game is a little bit more of a gripe, but again, Mason County had about 18 hours to recover. They still played an opponent the next day that played after them, so again, while they played more minutes, they still had more TIME to recover from it than their opponent did from their game. 12 extra minutes of game time or 32 minutes of game time after you, what do you think?

BTW, this is exactly why I posted what I did about Mason County fans and their placement of teams in this. You're the only ones who think 2008 Mason County was in the top 4. You're the only ones that think 2004 Warren Central wasn't. You're probably more than half the votes for 2003 Mason County being #1. Check my vote. It's for 2007 Scott County, which was pretty much a consensus pick when we had a similar discussion a month ago. I don't just vote for Warren Central because they're my team, but I certainly believe they are one of the top 4 champions. I don't know that I'd put them above 2003 Mason County or not. But they're definitely better than 2004 Mason County, and I'm very, very tired of hearing about it.

Lexington Catholic gets the nod as #1 for the way they rolled through the competition. They won their games by a combined score of 269-195. Their closest game was a 13 point win over a talented North Hardin squad in the semi-finals.

 

Scott County's depth and star-power with Mackey and Walls lands them at #2. Warren Central's dominance through the tourney and athleticism gives them #3. Holmes' talent, length, and athleticism puts them at #4. The Chris Lofton experience gives Mason County #5.

2002 LexCath was very, very good. They are in my top three for sure.

 

Agreed. I purposely waited to look through other's posts until after I had submitted my own. I think many are seriously under-estimating how good this Lexington Catholic team was.

 

Smith, Green, Morton, Graham, Morones, Rompf were tough, and I don't think plenty of past champions could handle their precision in the full-court.

 

Further, this group was 29-2 entering the post-season. Their first loss was a 61-60 loss to DeMatha, MD; their second was a 83-82 loss to West Jessamine on January 4th. From there on, the Knights wouldn't lose again.

 

I don't see how anyone could rank them any lower than 3rd/4th considering all this.

I have to agree that Jones not eligible hurt them. I still think if he played they would have had two in a row as well.

Honestly that 2009 Holmes team with Riley, D. Johnson/Housely, J. Johnson, R. Johnson, and Pittman was better than the 2008 team with Henderson, Avery, Pittman, R. Johnson, and J. Johnson. They lost Avery and Henderson but made it back to the state championship despite a tougher road to the finals compared to last year.

 

I also think this years' team was a better defensive team as well and if you look at the match ups this year compared to last, I like Holmes chances.

 

Holmes had nobody last year that could match up with Darius and Trevor because of their size. When you look at Holmes size across the board this year compared to last, I just don't think Mason Co would have been able to handle their size and athleticism. I'd even go as far as saying Pittman and R. Johnson were better this year as juniors than Miller and Setty were last year as seniors.

 

No way Pittman and R. Johnson are better this year than Miller as a Senior. Miller had greater basketball IQ and court awareness than either of these players. They may close the gap some by the time they are seniors, but they will never be as good.
