dawgs83 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 You would think he would do things right. This is the same person Deon Lee who was involved in the Northwestern point shaving scandal back in the 90's
afi100guy Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I wondered why the Legends were not playing this weekend in the 11U State. They were a strong team. This is very unfortunate for the kids.

I heard they had plans to play in Indy this weekend. Everyone needs to remember that he has been charged, not convicted.

Qryche11 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 According to news reports, he is currently serving probation for a drug conviction in Texas. That's SOLID.
PureFan Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 According to news reports, he is currently serving probation for a drug conviction in Texas. Wouldn't this show up on a criminal background check? Shouldn't one have been conducted before he was alowed to work with youth?
getalife Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Does AAU require criminal background checks for the coaches? If not they should.
polarbear1994 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Wow... and here I thought the AAU was a clean program...
afi100guy Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Wow... and here I thought the AAU was a clean program... Now, lets not condemn AAU for the alleged acts of one coach. There are good and bad people in all walks of life. I can honestly say that I have not done a background check on any of the AAU coaches for my sons. However, I met with each before committing to play and go with my gut. That has worked pretty well so far.
sidelinedoc Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 This is a sad event for the alleged victim and the team. I wish the background checks were mandatory. In this day and age, I am shocked that it isn't.
dawgs83 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Be awfully hard for AAU organization to conduct background checks on all the AAU teams out there. There are so many teams in each age group. Not to mention how coaches change throughout the year. I think its the responsibility of parents to research the coach and the program. It was pretty widely known that he was involved in the point shaving scandal at Northwestern. That alone should have been enough for me not to let my son play for him.
Slemac90 Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 AAU requires that prospective coaches submit their social security number, date of birth and 7 year address history when applying for membership. However, membership only has to be obtained for state, AAU Super Regionals, and national tournaments. What the AAU national office does with that information is unknown to me? There really is no governing body for any select sports to monitor the backgrounds of the coaches except for the parents.

oldonetechnique Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Said on the news that AAU does not check the background of its players. I am not a supporter of AAU or other club sports that use school aged athletes, for this and other reasons.
