Middle School Hoops Question??

Looking for honest opinions here. 8th grade coach here in NKY mandates that his players NOT participate in AAU during the school season even though there would zero conflicts with neither practices or games. Looking for thoughts on this, and wondering if your son played at this school and AAU what would you do?

To play a full AAU and school schedule, there will be conflicts (or one of the two is not worth participating in). For my sons, it is school ball first and then AAU. I would have a heart to heart with the coach and explain that school ball comes first but that AAU is something we will participate in. If my son gets cut because of that, the administration will be hearing from me. The KHSAA allows it so there is no reason that coach can mandate anything different.

As an aside, I think the coach would not be very intelligent in this approach. AAU competition leads to better school ball play.

Good response I also can not see how there are no conflicts....school ball should come first.

As a middle school coach, I might have a problem with it. If you are teaching one thing and then the player is being allowed to do something completely different in AAU compitition it could cause problems. We play both together so it is not an issue for us but that is a really tough situation. I guess as long as middle school was top priority I would allow it. If you ask me that question about a high school player, I would definitely say no.

I used to help coach a competitive 8th grade team. Lots and lots of games. Too many. Not enough time for practice. However, we had boys that played AAU on the weekend - usually Sundays. However, if we played in a weekend tourney on Sundays they skipped AAU. As long as that's how it worked, fine.

We had a similar issue a few years back. At the end of 7th. grade, we had a meeting and the 8th grade coach told us that he didn't reccomend anyone playing AAU durring the season. We took a school first approach as did a few other kids and it never was an issue. The one thing I can say is that the few kids who did play AAU excelled far beyond what the other players levels were and were the nucleus of the team.

My son played both this year and, as I was an assistant coach for his AAU team, we made sure there were no conflicts. We didn't get much practice time for AAU, because school ball dominated the weekdays. Something you might be interested in...we played a couple AAU games against his school coach who was helping out another team (thought I'd throw that curve ball at ya)!

I wouldn't rock the boat. I would have my son play school ball then when it was over kick off the AAU season. The Middle School teams in N Ky play upwards of 30-35 games. That's plenty of basketball.

The KHSAA does not allow 9th thru 12th graders to do both, what's the harm with following that lead one or two years earlier.

My son attends HMS, the 7th graders did not play AAU during the season and are now playing in a league and tournaments. The 8th graders did play both throughout the season. I saw as much, if not more improvement, on the 7th grade level as I did with the 8th graders.

The 6 kids that are 8th graders at HMS didnt practice AAU and only played 1 game a week. It was a total of 13 games of AAU (counting the tournament) from Dec 1-Jan 26th. Something to do on Sunday pretty much is all it was. By no means did they play any tourneys or have time to practice as school ball took up most of that time.

How can a middle school coach dictate what a player does on his own time? Sounds like the coach is on a power trip.

HE IS THE COACH OF THE TEAM!!!!!

I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I respect you guys because most people on here have been around hoops for a very long time and you know what you are talking about. Another tidbit to throw in............this situation is in Boone County, and a couple of years ago Boone County and Kenton County parted ways and no longer have a league together (this is a whole new thread topic). So, the only way for 8th grade kids at this school to play good competition from around all of NKY is to play on Sundays at SOAS.

Boone County and Kenton County really need to fix this issue because it's only hurting the kids........IMO.

As long as the player is fulfilling all his obligations to the school team, I don't see how the coach has a say in this.
