Rico is definitely money. Pittman needs to play more on the low post. Rico driving with Pittman underneathe would be unstoppable. The 16th region officials were wonderful. The tic-tack officiating in the ninth region has obviously hurt ninth region teams when they get down state. Let the kids decide the game they will always adjust when the refs let them play and call it evenly on both ends of the floor. Very consistent officiating from the guys and gal from the 16th.

Pittman's dunk got them a little momentum...

However, the killer was the mini run Holmes went on after the intentional foul call on NCC which Pittman converted for two free throws and then a basket off the possession and then added 3-4 more to make it a three possession game.

At that point NCC had to rush a little and were off the mark.

In regards to the call, it was the correct one. Even though the kid made a play on the ball, you can't hack a player from directly behind with two hands and place the offensive player in a perilous position particularly going straight at the basket.

Overall, I thought it was a well officiated game both ways.

The only way that this was officiated well is that it was inconsistent on both sides. The intentional foul was a call that should not have been made. If the foul from the Ryle kid wasn't intentional, this one wasn't as well. The officials were terrible. They didn't decide the game, so I'm going sour grapes over that. However, you can't let kids bang all game and then pick and choose when to call fouls. Pittman got fouled on the baseline so hard that you heard his arm get slapped, then on the same sequence, Pangallo slipped and they called a cheap foul on Housely. The ref that called the intentional is the one representing the 16th at Rupp??? He was awful.

Usually agree with LABS & Old Guy, but I thought the intentional foul call was wrong. Just a good hard foul, nothing intentional. It seems like every time a player goes in for a dunk, if he gets fouled, it's intentional. Had he been going for a traditional layup, I don't think the same foul would've been called intentional.

In my mind, definetely the turning point of the game!

NCC did have a great game plan and if one of the NCC players had had a better shooting percentage night, it just might have been closer at the end.

I have got to give the Holmes kids a big pat on the back as they played team ball through the game and kept their cool even when NCC started to foul them late in the game

BTW the intentional foul call was indeed a very good call by the men in stripes.

Your definition of very good and mine are different. He ran in hard to foul, but when contact was made, he went in for the ball and wrapped around him.

It swung momentum, but even if the foul wasn't intentional, Holmes would have been up 6 after the FTs and NewCath was struggling in its half court set. NewCath was too inconsistent around the rim to win today. I believe that the knowledge that Pittman was around changed a lot of shots. The better team won.

Very good points and I agree. I have to ask you this though.

Had that been one of the Holmes players who committed a foul like that (which honestly would never happen as I've seen them give easy lay ups many times this year because they don't play like that) would you still think it wasn't intentional? The bottom line is, the kid knew Pittman was going to dunk so he intentionally fouled him with some force to keep it from happening.

I don't want to turn this thread in to the same direction that the Ryle thread turned, but I think it was a pretty good call, especially after the one that the refs let go against Ryle.

Which is why the intentional was called...

The player for NCC called for an intentional, came away with the ball. I think with out that call, this game comes down to the wire. If these officials are the best of the 16th, I would hate to see the rest of them. These guys were horrible on both sides of the court.

Riley had a huge game, his hustle kept NCC from having many open looks from 3. Should be an exciting game Tuesday, Boone comes in owning a prior victory, Holmes comes in wanting some payback.

If Pittman got fouled from behind with a push in the back (I couldn't see it) it was the right call. No question. It was completely different than the Ryle game because the Ryle player did not foul from behind. He just hacked down hard on his left arm.

Housely walked on his dunk. You can't catch the ball and take two steps without a dribble. Immaterial to the outcome since it was at the very end.

Jake Geisler was a strong scoring option for NCC but he simply missed shots. Watching him, Brown, Thelen, and Arnold battle the next two years will be fun.

I'll say it again like I did in the update thread. Holmes's offense may not be what it once was earlier in the season (ball stalling, slow pace by opposing teams, bad shooting nights by Holmes, etc.), they arguably have one of the best defenses in the state, if not the best. They have held numerous teams to season lows in scoring all year and others either their 2nd or 3rd lowest lows.

Their defense picks up where there offense may have left off.

You mean Rice? :D

I agree.

Since the loss to Boone, they've given up an average of just 41 ppg.

Throughout the post season, they've given up an average of 35 ppg. (12 below their season average)

Not many teams are going to beat them with them playing defense the way they are right now.

I agree with a lot of this. After that intentional foul, they made both free throws and then got another basket to go up six. I'm thinking that on NC's next possesion Pittman pinned a lay up against the glass too for even more momentum.

I too thought the officiating was pretty good. The only question I had was on that call because I thought they got some ball, but what LABS said makes sense... FWIW, I was sitting near a few NC fans at the end of the game and when Housely was going to the rim I heard "Don't let him dunk it!" If you are going to say that, then I don't think you can complain about an intentional foul.

I thought that Holmes sometimes settled for jumpshots when they would've been better served to attack the rim like Rico did in the fourth quarter.

From my seat he got fouled from behind with a push in the back.
