February 26, 200917 yr Congratulations!:thumb: I spent time in the active duty and retired from the KY National Guard. If you have any questions at all, PM me and I will try to answer them or guide you towards someone who can. Let me be among the first that Thank You for serving this country and helping to keep it free and safe!
February 27, 200917 yr My best wishes to you. Do you know where you'll be going for Basic and AIT? My son has been in the guard for about a year and a half. He went in a bit older than many of the recruits as he had a couple years of college under his belt. He, too, played sports up until the time he enlisted. The combination of a few years out of high school and the lessons learned from playing sports (primarily baseball) for many years gave him many advantages in the process. He was a leader and he graduated with honors. I'm sure it will be the same for you if you apply those lessons. Warn your parents though! When I went to my son's Basic graudation (OK in the summer), I didn't recognize him when I first looked at him. I actually stared at him and then let out a squeal when I finally realized it was him. He lost 30 lbs!
February 27, 200917 yr Hey, clipper, Thank You, too. We need to get this young soldier some information about what to expect aside from the recruiter's official spill. 1.) It's not as great as what they will tell you. 2.)It is no where as bad as anything you will hear. 3.)IT IS NOTHING LIKE HOLLYWOOD! 4.)Never volunteer for anything. 5.) It is a weapon, not a gun. 6.) Sergeants are to NEVER, EVER to be refered to as "Sir" . We all worked for a living. 7.) Get used to Hurrying Up! 8.) Get used to waiting. 9.) Get all the privacy you can for the next few weeks, because you won't have any for the next few months. 10.) Basic is only as bad or good as you make it. Some will scare you, some will seem ignorant as all get out. When you get done, you will feel invincible, have a sense of accomplishment, pride and self confidence. 11.) Unless you are just super gung ho, try to stay in the middle. Don't be the example, good or bad. If you make it through 12 weeks and they don't know your name still, you have done well! 12.) Enjoy it! You will learn a lot about nkuclubbaseball19 that you never knew before. AND: ALL of us here will be thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers. HOOO-AHHH! Add what you can, clipper! Let's help them on their way.
February 27, 200917 yr Excellent advice Daddy Cat! Served in the Big Red 1 back in the 80's and have a son that served in Iraq. nkuclubbaseball19, Thank you in advance for your service. What MOS are you trying for?

Let's help them on their way. Congrats..I guess?!! So true about they waiting comment. You always hurry up to wait and wait and wait. FF has been in the KYNG for 10 years and I am always waiting..as he. Never believe the first thing your hear b/c it will change lol. He has served in Afghanistan and had a couple state side tours. You will be busy. Just expect the unexpected. They fail to tell you alot so do your research. It never fails here whenever we make plans on the weekend.....Drill comes. GRRR!!! That one weekend a month comes very fast.
February 27, 200917 yr Well, Thank FF for his service, too, and thank you, Mrs. Fair Fan. The life of an Army (or any service) Wife is a Noble one. My wife stood behind me for choosing to serve and sometimes paid the price for my serving in the form of waiting, worrying and, as you said, missing important events. My kids were not little when I deployed after 9/11, but they were not grown, either, and she had to handle the whole homefront for a year by herself with the worries she had compounded by them and their worries. It is sometimes a thankless job for the Army wife, but just the thoughts of home and her will get many a soldier through a long, miserable tour! Thanks again. Make him take YOU out to eat on Veteran's Day! You earned it, too!

I do support FF 100% but sometimes I don't show it lol. AKA when I pout that he is going to be late b/c of the army.
February 28, 200917 yr If it makes you feel better, I am sure that he would rather not be late. It happens and there is nothing he can do about it. Uncle Sam and his minions can be rough sometimes. Seriously, make him take you out for dinner. Make him wait on you! Let me ask you this. Have the words "Well, maybe I'LL just join the National Guard and never be home, either!" Ever come out of your mouth? It was one of my wife's favorites when I was in and she was mad.

I hope you have a strong girl if you have one to understand it all Its a tough job to have and I think you are wonderful person for wanting to to serve your country. It takes a special person to do this and I commend you. Thank you.

When your spouse/family is deployed to a hostile area, and you are the sole parent/provider at home taking care of everything from children, house and/or working full time it is very stressful. Daddy Cat gave good advice - 6.) Sergeants are to NEVER, EVER to be refered to as "Sir" . We all worked for a living Edited February 28, 200917 yr by GaViking
February 28, 200917 yr HE HE HE! Yes I say it a lot! You ARE a REAL Army wife, then! (I always offered to drive mine to the recruiter's when she said it. If she would have ever bit, it would have been my luck she would have outranked me in 2 years!):ohbrother: Do you belong to the Family Support Group, Mrs. Fair Fan? It's a good way to be involved with the other Guard families.
