I think the columnist could have pointed out that not only are 4 of the 5 seniors on the team excel on the court, they also excel in the classroom

with gpa's approaching 4.0, but that fact would not match up with his story.

Hatchet job by someone who is just looking to show their intellecutual snobbery from a distance.

Thanks for the buzzkill, Courrier Journal. If Elliott County had gone 2-24 would it have resulted in an increase in their accountability index score? This once in a century basketball team is a well deserved and valuable source of civic pride. Having the kids excited about going to school and having good things happen once they get there go hand in hand. Best of luck to Elliott County from Northern Kentucky. I hope you run the table and cut down the nets at Rupp.

You have to admire someone in Rocky's position that cares so much for his county.

I am not an Elliott County homer, but I have to say… what a bunch of pseudo-intellectual agenda driven elitist psycho-babble—written from 150 miles away by a non-athlete who has likely never competed at anything more significant than the kick ball games required in his PE classes 40 years ago.

 

It is clear that Mr. Hawpe has never seen the Elliott County kids compete in person. There’s no way anyone could watch these kids, playing with focus, passion and the throttle wide open for 32 minutes and still fail to see what makes them special. Add in the fact that one phone call would have informed him that they are also solid students in the classroom and Mr. Hawpe’s opinion amounts to little more than a pile of manure.

 

I know every one of the Elliott County players… especially the starting five. Although I know many outstanding young men and women, I can honestly state that there is not a finer group of young men anywhere. They will be successes in life, because they have learned how to be successful in the classroom AND on the court. Beyond merely facing the challenges of comprehending algebra or diagramming sentences, the character forged in the heat of athletic competition is an added facet that will ensure that these kids will be better equipped to stand up to the challenges and disappointments life will inevitably throw their way. Sadly, this is something that men like Mr. Hawpe will never truly comprehend.

 

To attempt to deflate the justifiable pride in these kids by the residents of Sandy Hook by riding the coattails of their success in an effort to forward a narrow and apparently inaccurate stereotype about the failings of the educational system in Elliott County is shameful. If the numbers are as bad as Mr. Hawpe suggests, fine, they should be dealt with, but not in a manner that diminishes or discounts the accomplishments of kids who are clearly exceptions to the rule. They are outstanding role models for the younger kids in Elliott County. They absolutely should be held up as examples of what hard work, discipline and commitment to excellence can accomplish.

 

The same can be said of the great kids doing the same things in Mason County, Scott County, LCA, Madisonville… fill in the blank. :thumb:

You know, I got to thinking about it and it really is unfair of me to suggest that the only thing Mr. Hawpe has competed at was "the kick ball games required in his PE classes 40 years ago." I completely overlooked the fierce Badminton and Cornhole matches he engages in to this day at family picnics. :scared: :eek: :scared:

He's simply pointing out that if everyone put as much attention on kids' schooling as they do on something as trivial as HS sports, maybe we as a state wouldn't lag so far behind the rest of the nation.

Then he could have said it that way in an article that probably would have received far less readers, instead of hanging it on the accomplishments of some truly outstanding young men in a misplaced attempt to gain increased awareness.

 

OR... he could have done just a tiny bit of homework... like maybe one phone call to the school... to learn that these young men don't fit the negative stereotype.

 

AND THEN, he could have written an entirely appropriate POSITIVE article about how these young men are indeed role models for their younger schoolmates who would benefit by following their examples.

 

BUT, that would require a level of common sense and lack of an agenda that is entirely uncommon these days.

 

So by all means, keep defending the indefensible media elitism that is literally running newspapers out of business. :thumb:
