Mustang Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 (edited) Final Newport comes from behind in the final quarter to beat Brossart in a key NKAC Division II battle. The Mustangs led by 8 on three occasions in the third quarter but could not sustain and preserve the lead. The Cats go 6-6 from the charity stripe late in the fourth quarter and 9/10 on the night to doom the Mustangs. Mitch Patterson hit a 3 at the buzzer to close the gap to 1, after the game had been sealed by a pair of free-throws by David Darnel. Drew Kremer led Brossart with 18 points, Jacob Rieger added 12, adn Mitch Patterson as Brossart sustained their second conference loss of the season. Nkysportsblog Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 This is a big win for Newport heading into districts. Brossart is a team that forces you to be patient and disciplined on both ends of the court which is what Newport usually struggles with. Sounds like a great game wish I could have gone.
Eta Rho Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Newport seems to have really came on late in the season. They're going to be a dangerous team heading in to districts.

I think they've showed glimpses all season. Their problem is consistency. They are definitely a dangerous team. I would be worried if I'm a Highlands fan.
Qryche11 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I am definitely worried about the Cats as I predicted them as my darkhorse this year. Darnell can get you for 20/10 and McDaniel if he wants can do the same. They really offer a nice 1/2 bigman punch. The key for them will be how well their guards play and how disciplined they play. Congrats to the Wildcats.
KillerCats09 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Both teams played great tonight. Brossart played their usual discipline game and Newport actually adapted to it seeing that Newport is usually a run and shoot team. I also noticed that some of the NewCath's coaches were there tonight so one might believe that Newport has a good chance against Highlands in the districts. I know that Newport has Dayton first but Newport hasn't had too much trouble beating the Devils this season.
Theoldman12 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 How is the division II looking. Who is at #1 for it or who are the front runners?
StickerMann Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 How is the division II looking. Who is at #1 for it or who are the front runners? Brossart and Newport end up co-champions I believe?
Theoldman12 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Brossart and Newport end up co-champions I believe? How is that? Holy Cross beat Newport and I believe their only loss was to Brossart in division II, but I could be wrong. Sorry I know this is off topic, but who is in division II this will clear things up. On the game this is a very big game for Newport as they are playing very well it seems. If I am Highlands i'm not looking forward to playing them in the districts as when they are on they can play with anybody just depends on what attitude they bring to the game.

DII: Highlands, Newport, Newcath, Holy Cross, St. Henry, Lloyd, Brossart Pretty sure those are the DII schools in nky.

Sorry I know this is off topic, but who is in division II this will clear things up. Indians lost to Brossart, and Highlands and have St. Henry on their dance card for Friday night in Latonia. It looks like a win over the Cru on Friday night will make it a three way split for the DII title.

nptwildcat Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Reminds me of 2006 Girls Districts - Newport played Dayton first and then went onto beat Highlands in the championship game. A win no one saw coming - Newport or Highlands. It would be great for the boys to pull an upset too.
DMZ76 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 WOW! Great job 'Cats! What makes 'dem Wildcats WILD?

Don't forget the Ladycats that district tournament they also upset NCC before the upset of Highlands. I look for a similar situation to occur this year by knocking off Highlands to get to the championship. Darnell is a senior and is ready to put these Wildcats on his back.
