I think each team has strenghts and weaknesses, reasons they could win and reasons they may not win, so here are my thoughts:

Highlands - obviouslythe most talented team and undefeated in the 9th region, so the big favorite. Drawback is they don't seem to play well at tourney time. I'm sure their fans would have thought they would have won a regional tourney before now with this talent, but for some reason or another they haven't. Will they come up short again this year?

Boone Co. - Don't seem to have the talent they usually have, outside of Bradley, but have been pretty consistent all year. Usually do play well at tourney time, and have Coach Fookes who can get them ready.

 

NDA - Have been really good at times, and have been really bad at times. Never have seemed to have settled in all year. Right now haven't been playing well, so can they turn it around by next week?

 

NCC - Are playing better recently, excluding the Ryle game, but are not very deep at all, and play their only 6 players almost exclusively. Depend very heavily on Sandfoss and Tabor, so foul trouble could really hurt them. If they can avoid this, and Sandfoss doesn't have a bad night, they can win.

 

Ryle - Seem to have been playing better since Moss left team. Sometimes their is addition by subtraction, and this may be the case. However, they are really young and that can hurt at tourney time. They are probably a tear or two away, but could get hot and steal it like Connor did last year.

 

Connor - Champs until someone beats them, but have had so many injuries I don't see how they could defend title

 

These are just my thoughts, so have at it.

 

My gosh, when should have they won the regional tournament with the exception of maybe last year. Are you suggesting two years ago Highlands’s fans thought they were going to win the regional tournament? I don’t think many were picking them over Notre Dame. I personally thought they should have won it last year, but you make it sound as if this team has not lived up to the expectations. Anyone familiar with this team or with girls’ basketball in Northern Kentucky would tell you that this is their year. They're 14-0 in the region. I would say that anything short of a regional championship this year and your post has merit.

 

You also state they don't play well at tournament time. They've won their district tournament the last two years as freshman and sophomores. Their freshman year they were up by 7 against Notre Dame at the half in the regional semi-finals. If you're stating they don't seem to play well at tournament time based on the lost to Conner last year then please articulate that a little more clearly.

If Dixie doesn't win it all, then it will probably be Highlands. Highlands's two leading scorers combined for 8 points last night against the best team team in Northern kentucky and only lost by one point. If this happens to any other team in the 9th region the margin of victory is probably 20 points.

Say what you will but it has been a dang good year for 9th Region Basketball. You just never know who is going to win and most of the games have been fairly close. Districts and Regionals should be a treat and whomever wins I hope the entire N. Ky. area gets behind them for the State Tourney! Good luck and stay healthy.

Agreed!!! This is as strong and competitive the ninth has been in a while.

I am going with NDA for two reasons: 1. awesome senior class with Jackson, Delph, Ludwig, Albanesse and Walker. and 2. they have been there before two years ago. I saw them anhilate Lexington Christian and if they can get on that level again, look out.

 

I think this will likely be one of the best overall tournaments in years with the balance but NDA is the team to beat. Looking forward to it.

I didn't know your current seniors didn't count. You make it sound like they the team is just juniors. I think the senior group has a lot of talent. Last year I thought they should have won, and they lost by about 10 points in the regional, and the year before many Highlands posters were saying they would make a real run. You mention they were up 7 points in the first half against ND, but they lost by 20. Those are the instances I am refering to. Also, your senior group has never been to a regional final, so I'll stand by my comments.

Not looking for an argument, but those are the facts, and I'm sure some of your fans feel the same way as a number have mentioned these very facts to me.

Come on, somebody go out on a limb and pick an upset! Plenty of great teams in the ninth. Hard as it is to believe there are even some I don't have any pictures of.

I like Boone County's chances in the 9th. Not really going out on a limb because they are a strong contender but going with them to represent the 9th at Diddle.

It seems that no one believes in back to back trips to state for the lady cougars.

I believe the injury bug may have been to much for Conner to overcome but who knows? I've seen a number of bigger surprises over the years.
