I'll have to do some research, but I believe it was only with the spread of Christianity throughout the Anglo-Saxon world that depictions of Jesus became prevelant. There are some Christian denominations to this day that do not allow statues or pictures in their places of worship. So, I would say that if you went to Egypt, (which I haven't so I could be completely wrong), a Christian Church there would show a Jesus with Egyptian ethnicity.

 

Not exactly. Icons are as old as the Christian Church itself. There are some very simple ones on the walls of ancient catacomb churches and certainly icons were popular by the time Constantine convened the Council of Nicea in the fourth century. Not to mention that what is far and away the best defense of the use of icons was written by St. John of Damascus, a resident of what would now be modern-day Syria.

I don't know why it's so hard to accept for people that Jesus likely looked exactly like the bulk of the current longtime residents of the Holy Land -- i.e. Palestinians, Jordanians, Lebanese and Israeli Arabs.

I meant in general. But I guarantee there are more than a few people on this board who would find it blasphemous to suggest Jesus looked like Arabs and other Semitic peoples, rather than the pure WASP-y version we see in most American churches.

Jesus had to have Middle Eastern features. That's where he was born. Many paintings of Him that are framed in churches today were made by European Renaissance artist, and they gave him an almost Nordic image. That can't be accurate, but it was probably political correct way to to it in Renaissance times.
