February 14, 200917 yr Let's not get to ga-ga over this kid,didn't he also say he read where he needed to drink a beer a day to flush his kidneys, I mean come on. Also, 5'7 inch running backs aren't gonna make it at too many colleges no matter where they go to high school, need a back up plan. Well i am one of the people that are going to go ga-ga over what Shawn Grim did. He at least tried to make himself better. It shows with hard work under the harshest conditions that you can make it. It is just a shame that his financial aid wasn't set up correctly so he could live out his dream completely. My heart goes out to this young man.

February 14, 200917 yr According to the show he is living at home and illegally picking coal from the sides of highway cut outs. Sad. It did seem like he was trying, but it is very difficult to break such a disfunctional chain without some real mentorship.

February 14, 200917 yr I've only watched the first half but it truly saddened me to the point of tears watching the young girls. At the same time it showed me how tough kids can be. Its unfortunate that they are put into the situation where they HAVE to be tough but thank goodness they can.

I'm not trying to be hyper-critical of his situation, but neither of my kids have gotten 100% college-aid, as well as most kids I know. They have to work AND go to school. Was his situation worse that the norm?

February 14, 200917 yr I pray this show isn't like all the others concerning EKY in which they all make us out to be the biggest hick rednecks in the world, with no sense at all while being poverty stricken to the max. I've been waiting on a documentary to show EKY in a positive light in which it really is, however, I'm not so sure this is going to be it. Just like anywhere there is going to be poverty and hardship, and to most people across the country they watch documentaries or shows like this and think thats what the entire EKY is about. However, that couldn't be further than the truth as EKY is a very special place, its sad that the rest of the country hardly gets to see it in that kinda light, and instead always gives more reason to stereotype. I was feeling the same as you but from what I saw it wasn't, the same old media potryal of EKY :madman:! Yes, there are poverty srtriken areas in Kentucky.....there are also pobverty striken areas in other parts of the country that are never shown. These bleeding heat media trash shows never show the people of the area that you are talking about. I guess being sucsessful doesn't sell as good as giving everyone something to point fingers and looik down their noses at . Typical mainstream media :puke:, I really didn't expect anything else.

I was not happy with the incest part either. That that was garbage. When you talk to the good folks in Eastern KY that have worked hard + done things the right way, you will be hard pressed to find a better group of people in this world! I think the way they showed the war casualties per capita was a great tribute to the loyalty the good people have! Heck even some of the worst people around would give you the shirt off their back. My wife is from the city and is amazed how much neighbors help each other out around here. :thumb: Good post stick.
February 14, 200917 yr Where was Matney or anybody in the community when this was happening? Surely someone that was followed by ABC for two years would help this young man. Was he a modest young man that didn't want anyone to know; I don't think you can hide living out of a truck, having to borrow people's showers, sleeping in the locker room on a pad. It just blows my mind that nobody knew of this kids situation being the athlete and star tha he was. Someone close to the situation needs to bring light on why they just stood around and didn't do anything.

But, would the possibility exsist that he leave EKY to pursue his education at a school that is less expensive, and/or in an area that has more part-time job opportunities available? He could potentially get a part-time job, find some roommates, or a room to rent fairly inexpensively, etc....just trying to throw out some alternative ideas, based on the limited information I have.
February 14, 200917 yr Don't jump on me, please. . No jumping. Sometimes the written word doesn't convey the intended meaning. My point was that he is nowhere near the normal kid that needs financial aid.

I don't think the following is limited to EKY kids. A lot of people just don't know how to nor maybe want to leave the area they know. While you can make sound arguments to do so they simply can't pull the trigger. It doesn't make sense to those of us who are not in his situation but its not unusual.
