colonel-fan Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Latin American Panel Calls U.S. Drug War a Failure MEXICO CITY -- As drug violence spirals out of control in Mexico, a commission led by three former Latin American heads of state blasted the U.S.-led drug war as a failure that is pushing Latin American societies to the breaking point. It's not only Latin American societies being pushed to their breaking point. One can drive to parts of Cincinnati and see the effects of drug addiction. Does drug use need to be legalized and taxed with part of the proceeds being used to finance rehab clinics. It's obvious the demand isn't going to go away.
sportsfan41 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Legalize all drugs? If that's what your suggesting then you must be delusional. That'll never happen in the US.

If you asked me last year I would have said no way the govenrment would be giving out billion dollar plus stimulus packages either, but it looks like it's going to happen. Strictly from the tax revenue side, I think there will be a push to legalize all drugs at some point.

halfback20 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I'm not sure legalizing all drugs is what we should do, but the current path isn't working either IMO. Drugs may not be legal, but you can get pretty much whatever drug you want right here in the United States, and you can get it fairly easy. The "War on Drugs" is putting a lot of people in prison, but I don't think it is doing very well in regards to eliminating drug use from the United States.

HB makes an excellent point, the prisons are full of people that shouldn't be there, what are we going to do with the real criminals? What are we going to do to stop the drug problem? It's been an utter failure thus far.
colonel-fan Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 Just to play devil's advocate if judges and police in the US started to get killed on a regular basis, would that change anyone's opinion?

Strictly from the tax revenue side, I think there will be a push to legalize all drugs at some point. Yes, Yes, Yes!!!! It kills me that people harp against the Iraq War. You wanna talk about a waste of money, failed strategy, and lies to start a war. Well the War on Drugs has been a complete and total failure. Drugs will never be eradicated and the people who use them now will continue to use them, just as legalization isn't going to make someone start using them.

2 Humped Camel Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I agree Marijuana probably should be, but I would stop there. There are alot of people IMO in jail for getting caught with, growing or selling a little pot who otherwise aren't criminals.

This is the only one I would see being legal. Many states have already "decriminalized" possession. Basically, just issuing a ticket for those caught with a under a certain amount. There are to many people in prison for this, we spend to much money fighting this and these resources can be put to better use.
ladiesbballcoach Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 There are many other things that are illegal that are still happening. Should we legalize them too because criminals won't stop doing them. Drunk driving rules sure haven't stopped drunk driving. Legalize it. How about outlawing murder. That sure hasn't stopping murders. Legalize it and tax it for the revenue. You murder someone and you have to pay a tax. You could make a killing off of it.
