Drunk driving rules sure haven't stopped drunk driving. Legalize it.

How about outlawing murder. That sure hasn't stopping murders. Legalize it and tax it for the revenue. You murder someone and you have to pay a tax. You could make a killing off of it.

People are dying by the thousands in Latin America all for the sake of bringing drugs across the American border. I don't know that legalization is the answer, but our current policy certainly hasn't seemed to stop the killings. Our policy has failed our neighbors in several ways... this might be the worst one.

I won't jump on such a broad question, but it certainly seems like a lot of violence and corruption in this country ended once we got rid of liquor prohibition.

If we had more law enforcement and prosecutors with a spine the war on drugs could be won. The problem as I've seen growing up though is that you get a slap on the wrist when you get caught with drugs instead of getting some serious time. Or if you have a lot of drugs you can get very little time simply by selling out a few clients or suppliers. If more people received harsher sentences there would be a lot more deterrence.

You're advocating tougher sentencing and more enforcement to win the war on drugs?

 

People have used mind altering substances since the begining of time. It's not going to stop and, based on what is happening in the countries to the south of the US, criminalizing it's use is only going to make things get worse. Much worse.

 

Drug money gives power and clout to people I would rather not have that power and clout.

Do you realize how many people are in prison right now because of drug laws? Our prisons are extremely overcrowded already. Why do you think they give small time dealers and users "deals" to get out of prison? Probably because a.) they want to catch a bigger fish, b.) there isn't a lot of room in prison these days.

You do realize that prohibition created organized crime in the United States don't you? It may have been here before, but it was never very lucrative until prohibition.

 

Do you think having laws banning alcohol or drugs stop people from using those substances? During the prohibition years many people continued to drink alcohol via speakeasies.

 

If you outlaw something and a large number of people still want it, they will get it no matter what.

I don't partake in it, but if I did why would I buy it at a liquor store or whatever, would I still want to buy it the same way that I always have because it would be cheaper for me? I would think a majority of people would still grow their own and it might not really cut down anything.

Okay...maybe I should clarify or rephrase myself on this. I am referring to the drug dealers. I really don't see a legalization of weed really doing anything. I still feel like what goes on now would continue. Maybe I am way off base here.
