Why cant they change the past?

When the group on the island went way back in time, and were confronted by the uniformed Dharma guys, Locke kills one (or was it two of them).

This would change the future of these people.

But Locke is special...

Maybe Faraday lied.

Sun is the woman.

Do we know the old woman Ben talks to at the end?

I believe so.

I think that is a woman that we've seen in Desmonds flash backs earlier on in the series. I think he bought Penelope's engagement ring from that woman. I can't remember what else she did...

I think she might be Faraday's mother too.

For some reason, I feel like she first showed up in Desmond's first "out-of-body" episode. I don't remember what she did or her significance, but I feel like she was there.

HB20, I agree, most things were not really suprising. That doesn't change the fact that I liked it a lot. I was really happy to see that some of the hanging plot points at the end of last season were dealt with really decisively. I hate when a show drags on a meaningless plot point (Having a specified end-date is a decided advantage for the writers).

Yep that is the same woman. She also was in a photograph on the Monk's desk in the episode in which we saw Desmond try to join a monastery.

I thinking this also.

It's strange but, didn't Desmond change the future when he saved Charlie's life the first 3-4 times before drowning in the underwater Dharma building?

He did, but as the old woman said "Fate has a way of 'course correcting' itself." Which is why Desmond constantly had to save Charlie until he finally told Charlie what had to happen and Charlie accepted his fate.

More or less meaning that the balance of fate and/or the time line must be maintained and it cannot be avoided. Essentially that you cannot change your destiny.

A few things:

To the first part: They can't change the past because the past and the future are inherently intertwined. Someone's fate, in this show's continuity, things are more or less supposed to happen. If something does not happen, adjustments are made in order to make sure it happens. As explained by the English lady during Desmond's flashback at the beginning of season 3.

Also being in the past that also means a set series of events had to happen to bring them back so if they indeed changed anything then something else might have altered the timeline which would have meant that they never could have gone back in the first place.

Kind of like if you go back in time and kill your own grandfather. If he dies, then you couldn't exist and thus could have never killed him. But if you could never have killed him then it would mean that you could exist and could have gone back in time in the first place in order to have done it which leads us to the previous sentence. More or less explaining why you can't change the past. Any alterations of the past means the future would be different and as such could not have happened. One of the many MANY problems with talking about time travel in any way shape or form.

Still with me folks?

To the second paragraph, I am not 100% sure those guys are Dharma. They might be but their uniforms didn't seem to look very Dharma to me AND the guy threatening them had an M1 Garand. Which would lead me to believe that they might have been soldiers trapped there somehow. But considering some of their misrepresentations of firearms in this show, I am probably emitting smoke from a rear facing orifice here.

To the third part, it could be that it has ALWAYS happened. The reason they are not changing the past is because it has been the past from the beginning. Note that Richard Alpert knew where to find Locke AND that he wouldn't recognize Locke when Locke next saw him. Because to Locke the next time he would see Richard would be in the past. The essential point I think that Lost is trying to convey is that past cannot be changed, it is going to follow a predetermined path and nothing can alter it. If something happens then it was meant to happen and has always happened.

Anyone follow me?

^^^Then the case is that we live in a circle of time and will constantly relive the same moments. Much like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day

^^^This perhaps is what happened to Sayid and Hurley when they relived the attack at the hotel twice.

They relived the attack twice?

I watched this show in its first season but it's way to weird for me now.

Me too.

Good to know I was somewhat on the right track about the origin of the weapons and uniforms. Even if it turned out they were Army and the stuff was captured.

You know, it just occurred to me that Jack was not in that episode. Has there ever been one he hasn't been in?
