Greatest All A Classic Moments

Yeah they were tough that year. At one point in the Elliott- Gallatin game, I thought we were going to upset them and we actually scored more points from the field, but Gallatin hit a bunch of free throws and put us away at the end.

Gallatin went to the championship that year and lost to UHA.

Sorry... but I couldn't resist...

1999 @ Newport - Eventual 9th Region All 'A' Champs Holy Cross Indians in a 1st round game with Heritage Academy. Little shoving match starts between HC's big boy with shaved head and Heritage's Burt Capel. Capel's dad rushes the floor to get a piece of the action and gets tossed from the premises. I laugh every time I think about it. LOL!!!

Todd Cox's tip-in from Harlan. I believe it was the '95 Championship game.

Yes, to beat Lexington Catholic 61-60.

The two games that stands out for me are the Trigg Co. and Metcalfe Co. game on a Thurs. afternoon with a packed house...

Metcalfe County won that game 94-90. A shootout!

Trigg also won the overall 2nd Region that season and lost another shootout to Corbin at Rupp in the state tournament, 105-84.

The best moment for me was watching Dilce Combs won the title in 1993! The whole crowd was behind them.

The entire crowd was for Dilce Combs. My best memory of that tournament was the Panthers beating Lexington Catholic on Friday night, 77-73.

As for the opponent in that 1993 final, Fulton County was a very fun team to watch as well. The Pilots came from a tiny school and beat Somerset, University Heights and Harlan to get to that final.

Seeing two tiny schools from deep corners of the state beat Lexington Catholic and University Heights on Friday was something special.

My favorite is the 1990 tournament held at Memorial Colusium in Lexington. Our school (Owsley County) made it to the championship game. We lost that game to University Heights Academy. But our 6'5 center, Jeff "Moose" Moore, was named tournament MVP by the media. I'm not sure that has happened many times since. And Moose still holds several All A state tournament records, such as the most points scored in the tournament. He scored 115 points for a 28.7 average.

There were very large crowds for that tournament. I believe most of Owsley County's 4,800 population was there for the finals. Anyway, it sure seemed that way. One entire side in maroon and white.

That was a great atmosphere at Memorial Coliseum and a great first tournament. I saw Owsley beat Harlan in the quarterfinals. Cumberland lost to Maysville in the second tournament in 1991 and the final one at Memorial Coliseum.

Cumberland winning the first girls tournament in 1991 with two exciting games was memorable for me.

Why was the girls tournament only four teams (sectional winners) in 1991 and only eight teams in 1992?

I am kind of partial to the 2007 State Championship squad from Brossart. One of their starters was hurt (wrist) just before the tournament and they went down and won it anyway. Along the way they defeated a UHA team which included two D1 players (Hopson, Tenn. and Edmondson, St. Johns) by twenty points before exacting revenge from the prior year on Bardstown in the Championship game.

What about the 1998 regional final?

They had regional tournaments both years, but decided to "test the waters" with inviting 4 to Memorial in 1991 and 8 in 1992. Bracken Co. made the Final 4 in 1991. Our sectional was @ LexCath and I remember our girls playing both the semis and Finals on the same day.

Thanks. I didn't remember that at all. My first real memories of the All A start in 1993 when Garrard's girl made it to Richmond. I guess I just didn't really pay attention to it before then.

That was a good one. Brossart had hammered Bracken twice that season. Once at Bracken and the championship game of the MCIT in 98. Bracken pulled it off 50-49.

I remember watching this also. We eventually lost in the finals that year to NCC. But my greatest memory would have to be watching the 2003 St Henry team win the All A state championship over OJ Mayo and Rose Hill.

That was a great team to watch. The guys had played together for several years, and it showed. If Schmidt hadn't gotten a little nicked up and had to sit for a few minutes, I believe they would have defeated Mason County in the Sweet 16 opening rounder.

A friend of mine, who happens to be an official, told me the day before that game that St. Henry would give Mason County all it wanted, and his crystal ball was working.

Not to threadjack, but that St. Henry team was an excellent TEAM.

Ditto on the treadjack, but I remember listening to that game and I agree, if Schmidt had stayed in the game, NKY would have had their 2nd Sweet Sixteen Champion!!

I'm another that was partial to the Brossart run in 2007 as I think, after watching most of the tournament, they beat the best four teams in the tourney along the road!! Especially liked the dominating performance in the semis, holding Tennessee bound Scotty Hopson to 6 points while blocking 3 of his shots, and 6'11" Langhi to 4; and then getting some revenge in the finals against a fine Bardstown team!!

Second highlight would be St. Henry's win in 2003, with a true homegrown team vs. Rose Hill's multistate AAU squad!! :thumb:
