Ditto on the treadjack, but I remember listening to that game and I agree, if Schmidt had stayed in the game, NKY would have had their 2nd Sweet Sixteen Champion!!

 

I have often thought that had the 9th drawn away from the tenth that season St. Henry would've been in the finals... They were the second best team in the state that year...

It's really a shame because teams like that at a small school like that don't come around very often. They competeted toe to toe with a team that went to multiple state championships and had multiple DI athletes. From a single A school that is unheard of. I don't know that anyone quite appreciated the Cru and what they were doing enough that year until we look back on it...

98 or 99 when UHA beat St. Henry in Richmond and the big guy who went on to Notre Dame broke the rim on a dunk just seconds into the game...WOW

Has to be for Deming this year, Defeating a tough Brossart team to advance to the Championship Game against Calvary Christian.

That was a good one. Brossart had hammered Bracken twice that season. Once at Bracken and the championship game of the MCIT in 98. Bracken pulled it off 50-49.

 

Bracken pulled out a 1-3-1 defense that night and made it tough for Nathan Seiter to do his thing.

 

BTW, Seiter was one of the classiest individuals I've ever met on and off the court.

The best moment for me was watching Dilce Combs won the title in 1993! The whole crowd was behind them.

 

Heston Beverly, David Halcomb and company were a pretyy decent team!

I have several moments in which Somerset made runs at the championship, finishing runner-up three times. Several games were decided in the last seconds of the games. In 2001 they hit a last second shot to beat Fort Knox to send them to the first championship game, in which they lost to Glasgow. Another was when they were down by something like 17 at the half against Newport Central Catholic, went to a triangle in one to shut down Catholic scoring and made a last second shot to win the game... Coach Thacker and his Somerset teams were always a tough out at he "all A" and made some very memorable moments at the "All A".... Rowan Co. is lucky to have him as their coach. Give him time to develop his players and he will be a force in the 16th region

This tournament goes way back to 1980 with Stan Steidel and Mike Swauger being strong proponents to getting this started locally. They invited teams from all over the state starting in 1982 and now it is a showcase tournament with each Region sending their best teams to play for the state crown.

 

I remember some great games especially the 1982 finals with Craynor Slone's Carlisle Co team coming up to play in the finals agains Bellevue over at Ludlow. Bellevue had a very good squad that year with Jimmy Maher, Steve Crittendon, Doug Miller, Doug shulte, Jeff Shoultheis, Tom Bosse to name a few. Carlisle Co I believe had Dave Henley(current Holmes coach). The final in this barn burner was 48 to 47. Tough to watch being a Tiger fan but I just remember how packed that gym was that night.

 

Bob Eades led the WV Bearcats to the next season's victory and then his teams would appear in the finals 3 of the next 4 yeas only to lose. One of those teams he led was Paris where he moved and took his son who was a fine player.

This is a GREAT tournament! I made the comment last fall when it was announced that they were going to start a volleyball All A state tournament and in time it would be one of the best volleyball tournaments in the state. Stan Steidel and his staff is very good at what they do and great to work for and with!
