Anyone else think these guys are as cool as I do? You always feel like they know something you don't. It has to be a great honor to walk along side the POTUS.

I've had the pleasure of working with the Secret Service several times, and I can tell you, they are top notch guys/gals!

I can remember attending the Indy 500 race when Dan Quayle was the Vice President. I had my youngest son on my shoulder and Vice President Quayle waved at him. A Secret Service agent stood right in front of me and watched me to whole time.

I didn't move until he left.

Indeed a very honorable profession. But it's not as exciting as you might think. There are only a selective few agents assigned to the personal protection details of the President/Vice President. Many other agents - the ones you don't see - are assigned to watch areas blocks away from the individuals, or are assigned to do the tedious setup work in advance of the visit. Their job becomes extremely busy during election years and then, for the most part, the agents go back to their normal duties conducting investigations of counterfeiting (rarely occurs in our area), identity theft, and credit card fraud. My office has been asked on numerous occasions to assist USSS on local protection details. They are indeed great guys, but it's definitely a job for younger guys without a family. Not because it's necessarily any more physically demanding than any other federal agent's job, but because you do travel a great deal and work some long, brutal hours during election years. They are also subject to being transferred to another city moreso than a lot of federal agencies, although they (and other federal agencies) have cut back on that somewhat these days due to the cost involved.

Definitely a cool job, but don't forget that these guys don't just protect people, they also investigate different things including counterfitting of US currency.

BTW, I talked to a Secret Service agent friend of mine a few months back who is close to one of the agents on Obama's protection team (or at least back then - they rotate teams frequently). Said the guy raved about Obama - that he was extremely friendly and well-liked by the agents. Even shot hoops with him one day.

In contrast, I personally knew an agent who was on the Clintons' protection team. Some interesting stories there. ;) And the agents absolutely hated Hillary.

In the major cities. Ain't a lot of counterfeiting going on in our part of the world, trust me.
