ColonelCrazy Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I've mentioned it in multiple threads and have spoken numerous times about it outside of BGP. Why don't the Reds make a push for Manny Ramirez? Why not at least offer him a deal and make a sales pitch? One thing that I have been impressed with is the moves that Walt Jocketty has made without mortgaging our future. Walt is a big trade type of guy, but he has been able to add depth & some talent to this roster without over spending and without trading away the young talent that we have here. For that, I am grateful. But the question remains. In all likelihood, we cannot compete with Jerry Hairston Jr. as our everyday left fielder. Sure, Hairston had a career year last year, but he was injured frequently and we cannot expect him 1.) to be in the lineup everyday and 2.) to duplicate last year's numbers. Chris Dickerson is option #2, and he has less than 500 major league at bats. So that leaves a giant hole in left field and a giant hole in the middle of the lineup. Who better than Manny Ramirez? My sales pitch to Manny Ramirez would include a 2 year deal worth about $40 million with the opportunity for incentives. It'd include a sales pitch from 2 young & very talented pitchers in Edinson Volquez & Johnny Cueto, both of whom share Ramirez's native land of the Dominican. The Reds have so many Dominican ties that it's worth a shot, although the price isn't right. But having Volquez, Cueto, Edwin, Taveras, Mario Soto & others sure can't hurt. But Manny is the type of "out of the ordinary" guy who I could see signing with somebody that nobody expects him to just to spite everyone. Here's hoping it's Cincinnati. Could you imagine that buzz that would surround this team with somebody like Manny in the lineup?

He's already been offered more, for more years by the big markets teams. Why would he take less, for less years with the Reds?

saint4 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I would love to see it. Something good needs to surround the Cincinnati teams to jump start them and get them rolling in the positive direction, why not sign him. It would be great.
ladiesbballcoach Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Simple, they are not seen as a contender so Manny would not want to come here. To convince him to come here you would have to SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overpay him that it would not be a wise signing.

The Nationals are not contenders but came within a a few dollars of signing Tex, if it were not for the money the Yankees threw at him.

cch5432 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Could they be contenders with Manny in the lineup? I think they very well could be. I literally think he could deliver 15-20 more wins on this team

I literally think he could deliver 15-20 more wins on this team And in that division with the Cubs being so unstable, the Brewers losing so much and being so young, the Astros not quite there, the Pirates being the Pirates, and the Cardinals very much in question, I think the Reds can make a run at it. Plus Manny in Cincy would be fun to watch!
Da champ Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I think the Reds are serious contenders with Manny, but it won't happen !!
Latch Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I think Hariston is here to play SS, but that might just be me. Anyway on to the topic. Offer him two years at $25M each just to see what he says. Can the Reds afford it would be my question. I don't think he would ever take it, but what is the worst thing he can say of you offer. It would make the Reds the second best team in the division in the preseason.
ladiesbballcoach Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I think the Reds are serious contenders with Manny, but it won't happen !! Assuming 1) Voquez can repeat last year. 2) Cueto can improve on last year. 3) Harang can get back to 2 years ago. 4) Arroyo can pitch like the 2nd half of the year and not the 1st half of the year.

Volquez more like 14 or 15 2. Cueto will improve, I think he is the future of this pitching staff. 3. Harang will be the ace of the starters. Did you read this Dusty ? 4. Arroyo will be up and down but 200 innings. Yes I'm a BIG homer !!

I could see Harang be around 18-20 wins. Arroyo 12-15. Cueto 12-15. Volquez 14-17 Bailey 8-10 But for the Reds to be consider contenders, all of the above need to happen.
00Rocket28 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009  I love it, every year you guys predict the Reds to at least win the division, 90+ wins
