January 4, 200917 yr However they arrive at prices, I don't think any area in Ky would support the NBA with half the seats going at above 100 per game.
January 4, 200917 yr College basketball tradition is too good in this area for an NBA team to survive.
January 5, 200917 yr Who would you say they would be?? Louisville, Lexington, or NKY( Greater Cincy)? Louisville would be my guess and I still don't think it would work.
January 5, 200917 yr Prices are predicated by how good the team is?? You should see prices for a Lakers game.
January 5, 200917 yr Football doesn't have a chance here. Baseball could work...but the River Bats would have to move, so I doubt it works too. Basketball is the most logical...but this is a college state/region, I don't think it would get the support it needs.
January 5, 200917 yr Don't know if this is 100 percent true but I heard when the Hornets were moving away from Charlotte that they seriously considered Louisville but Pitino really fought to not let it happen, anyone else know anything about this?
January 5, 200917 yr College basketball tradition is too good in this area for an NBA team to survive. Same reason pro football historically hasn't done well in Jax and Atlanta.
January 7, 200917 yr I'm going to take a different look at things and say that football might be the only sport that could survive. I'm basing that on a few things... 1. You'd be close enough to a major market (Cincinnati) that does have a team...a team that's been mired in mediocrity for the past couple of decades. Fans would be thrilled to be able to support a program that might actually win a few games...or at least have an owner that LOOKS like he wants to win games. 2. The NFL has the shortest home season. It'd be much easier to sell out a 60,000 stadium for 8 games than it would be to even come close to capacity crowds for a 40,000 seat baseball stadium for 81 games. And given the location, you might be able to pick up a lot of the nearby visitors' fans (Pittsburgh, Indy, Nashville, etc.) that would come to the game, because they can't get tickets to their own home games. 3. Baseball season is too long. And if your team is at the bottom of the standings, attendance is likely to drop off...fast. 4. As has already been stated, this area is high on college basketball. While having a chance to see Kobe or Lebron sounds nice, it's not going to happen every night. And with the season coinciding with UK and UofL...it'd become the ugly stepsister of sports. 5. Hockey? Do I really need to say anything on this? So, IF there's a pro sports that could survive in Kentucky, it'd likely be an NFL franchise. At least IMO.
January 7, 200917 yr That's a good point. I think the NFL could make it here. I don't think it will happen but I wish it would! You would also get a pull of folks from around the Hunington WV area that would help the numbers. Louisville is pretty central to pull from a lot of places.
January 10, 200917 yr I'd love to see an NBA team in KY, whether it be Louisville or Newport / Covington. If the prices were reasonable, they'd draw a decent crowd. Does anybody know the average attendance at an NBA game? I wonder if the Bank of Kentucky Center would be big enough for an NBA game...
January 11, 200917 yr The high was 22K and the low was 14K for averages last year. Overall the they were at 91.4% capacity. CC I would be all over one in Newport/Covington. That would be awesome.

I would like enjoy it as well. I think they could draw a solid crowd, assuming they'd attract a big crowd from the other side of the river. I'll tell you what. Good basketball, cheap beers & $1 hot dogs and you'd have a hard time not getting 14K there. As the GM, I'd make sure to get some local flavor in there as well. As much as this area loves college basketball, I think some would come out just to see the local guys. And our area has put plenty of talent into the NBA. Between Tayshaun Prince, Maxiell, James Posey, David West, etc., you'd be able to attract the college hoops fans. Obviously you couldn't have a "local only" NBA team, but a few of those guys I just mentioned would be a decent start to a solid NBA squad...
January 11, 200917 yr ^ I agree, I think if they could somehow find a place in Newport by the Levy possibly that would be an awesome spot and would draw a good amount of people. That would also benefit other businesses that are already there. I know that is HIGHLY unlikely but hey I can dream.
