With Mercer's coach still out they are being coached by ex Harrodsburg coach Spencer Tatum who IMO totally blew the game for Mercer with his erractic and illogical substitution patterns. I hate that for Spencer, he's a good guy.

 

I thought this was Burgin's best team since the Ish Taylor days. Is it possible that Burgin was the better team tonight? They have only lost once so they can't be that bad.

This loss can't be blamed on Coach Tatum. Mercer played with no intensity in the first half and the refs. played a major role in the Burgin win when the game was on the line. I thought Mercer Counties subs were what got them back into the game so I'm not understanding the comment about substitution pattens.

Is this a big upset? I am not familiar with the teams but isn't Mercer Co MUCH bigger than Burgin. Anyone know their enrollments?

I hear bad coaching and bad calls by refs, but what about bad playing. That does happen some times.

How did the Jamel kid play for Mercer?

Burgin did beat Mercer Co. last year when Coach Cundiff was the coach. As for the Taylor kid... he could be a very good ball player but he only wants to be about 50% of the game. If Taylor would play the entire game Mercer would win the regiion. I don't think that will happen because he doesn't have it in him.

Mercer's is close to 1,000; Burgin's is close to 150.

Tidbit Note: Burgin's only appearance in the Sweet Sixteen occured in 1938 behind 6'8" Jack Coleman, Sr. He later played at the University of Louisville and the NBA for Rochester and St. Louis winning 2 NBA title rings. Mr. Coleman's jersey is retired and hangs from the rafters in Freedom Hall. After his NBA career he returned to Burgin and lived there until his death several years ago. The Burgin gym is named after him.

I totally agree with you about the refs but the comment about the subs getting them back into the game?!? I am not for sure what you saw but there is absolutely no reason that McCloud should be in the game and Cinnamon on the bench. Cinnamon is their 2nd best player this year and a future stud (if he keeps working on his game) and should not be out of the game in favor of 2 (McCloud and Yeast) football players who happen to play basketball.

Mercer did not play with much intensity in the first half. Taylor was saddled with 2 fouls in the first quarter and questionable subs led to a very disorganized first half.

Burgin did beat Mercer last year but that team was torn apart by outside sources and anything can happen when that happens.

I think that would be an inaccurate statement. You're talking about a kid who still hasn't come out of his shell and is still learning what kind of player he can be. He is still learning the proper way to execute post moves and he hasn't had proper coaching until he got to high school. Last year was a setback for all people involved in Mercer County basketball and when it comes to measuring his ability, I think the best statement would be that he doesn't realize how much he impacts the team with is play and that he needs to take over the game with his ability and become "the man". I think he just needs to mature and keep listening to his coaches. I think he wants to be the best player 100% of the time, he just doesn't know how to. He definitely has it in him, it's up to his coaches to bring it out of him.
