A new spin on the auto bailout

Featured Replies

Of course this would be lamblasted as an idea but I am too old to care.:p

So, anyhow, the auto makers want money and have unsold inventory.

How about each household gets $20,000 or so from the government and it can ONLY be used to by a auto from one of the Big 3 automakers.

They get the bailout money they want.

They get rid of unwanted inventory.

The taxpayers actually get something out of the money being used to bail out the automakers.

Hey! And then I could actually have a NEW car!

What if I want to buy two certified pre-owned cars. Could I do that instead? :D

I don't need a car. How bout we use it towards my mortgage? Or how about we throw it into my 401K to recoup a portion of what I lost?

It just sounds to good for the taxpayer to be approved by the politicians. But its the best plan I have heard so far if they are going to get some bailout money. The people footing the bill should also get something besides higher taxes. It looks like every state is trying to raise taxes instead of tough spending cuts. When you get layed off or lose your home one has to make some tough decisions.

That wouldn't help them with their inventory of cars they can't sell.

I wouldn't buy a vehicle from any of the 3 auto makers having the problem. Been there and done that. Give me a quality automobile product that won't blow a head gasket at 80K or other problems buying a used car with 20K and I might consider it.

Umm, the car would be free to you. You wouldn't take a free car?

Ever heard of the game "White Elephant"? I wonder if that game could stimulate the economy.

Not if I had to pay for the repairs.

It's been my experience that all makes of autos can last forever or have problems. It is all in how they are treated. Preventative and routine maintenance go a long way on keeping a car up and running. I've had several Chevy's and Fords, and 1 Dodge with over 100K miles without any major problems. One Ford truck even had over 300K miles when I sold it, and it is still on the road. Anyone can get a lemon, but if you take care of your car, it will take care of you.

Great idea. I would buy a new F150 or Pontiac G8

Blown head gasket usually = someone not taking care of the car..........

Acutally Ford had a recall on Taurus models in the mid/late 90's for this problem and they paid for the repair. The car never ran right after that.

There has been a lot of talk in Washington about helping people who in this housing market overextended themselves and are having trouble paying their mortgage where "helping" essentially means giving them money. IMHO, a better plan would be to give an additional tax break to someone if they would buy house. That should stimulate demand in the housing market, help stabilize housing prices, and help the economy in general. The benefits of the program would also be targeted at those who are fiscally responsible instead of providing an incentive for irresponsible behavior.

How many households in the US? Somewhere in the 140 million range isn't it? Cost to do this would be 2.8 Trillion dollars.

I have driven everyone of my Ford and GM productd for at least 150,000 miles. One currently has 244,000 miles and is still running strong. Not always, but in general, you get the reliability out of your vehicles that you put into maintaining them. Foriegn or domestic.
