I agree with this. My thought was leave 6A alone but compress the other five classes into 4 classes.I think it will make for better playoff matchups and eliminate the 0 and 1 win teams from the playoffs.

I completely agree that no 1-9 or 0-10 team should ever get an 11th game. It's just not right!!! A playoff game is earned, not given!!!!

I'm fine with having 4 teams in. It's not this way with most playoff games, but a good deal of the time you have 4's that "upset" 1's and 3's beating 2's isn't all that uncommon.

 

I think 5 Classes would be the best bet and all the other intangibles would work themselves out.

I'm not a huge fan of six classes, either, but let's be honest. The only thing you're going to change with less classes is that it will be a little more difficult for the same elite team to win back-to-back titles.

 

There will always be a select few teams every year that are the only ones to have a real chance. And the "elite" teams - by definition - aren't going to quickly change. By definition, an elite team takes an extraordinary combination of circumstances, talent, luck, good coaching, good facilities, strong fan base, etc. to come together. Building an elite program takes time and effort, but once established, it will last longer than the "flash in the pan" program because it builds on its own success.

 

You simply can't have 20 elite teams in every class, by definition.

 

The old "bell curve" is very applicable, even here. The elite are the top 5-10%...i.e., in 6A this year, I would consider St. X and Trinity to be the elite, although I would elevate the Pioneers to this group based on the way they ended the season. (they were - IMO - definitely #3 among that group, but they elevated their game well above everyone else at the end of the season). Whether you agree about SK or think a fourth team deserves to be included in that list is irrelevant; it's still just 2-4 of 36 or 37 teams, or between 5-10%.

 

Let's say 5A and 6A were merged this year. What teams would have constituted the "elite" - the ones with a reasonable chance to win it all? You've added several really good teams - Bowling Green, John Hardin, Christian County, Oldham County - but I would say that the above list of 3 only increases by maybe 1 by adding Highlands. So now the elite is 4 of about 75 teams...and you still have a pretty solid chance of a "repeat" champ.

 

We simply need to see the rest of the state pull themselves up to the challenge of being able to compete with the current gorillas. That's the challenge - and the only thing that will affect the domination of the few. It can be done...remember when Boyle County was a team you scheduled for Homecoming? And Oldham County - a frequent top 10 team from the mid 80s to 2000 - came out of a four year downhill spiral this year with a tremendous 9-3 season and a top 10 ranking. The Colonels appear headed in the right direction again under Matt Brown. Lexington Christian? Raceland? Fern Creek? Ballard? Manual? Scott County? Simon Kenton? Johnson Central? These all look like places with some or all of the ingredients in place to challenge for their place at the table.

 

The "bigs" have thrown down the gauntlet - repeatedly - it's up to the rest of the state to respond.

I agree. We should go back to four (or even five) classes. What I'd really like to see is four regular classes with a single upper class for anyone that wants to give it a shot.
