This is a violation. Touching the official is the same as touching the floor where the official is standing (Rule 4.4.4). Possession goes to Team B at the spot of the violation (where the ball touched the official).

A1 has the ball in the frontcourt and passes it towards A2 who is also in the frontcourt near the division line. It goes past A2 and hits the referee who is on the other side of the division line (ie in the backcourt). The ball bounces off of the referee and comes back to A2 who picks it up while still in the frontcourt?

 

Do you blow your whistle? Was there any violation?

 

What was the call???? I thnk the official is considered part of the floor so if it hit him in backcourt and came back to front court it would be the same if it had back spin onit and came back so I would say no call, play.

The call on the original play is a violation. Your "back spin" example would also be a violation.

What made it a violation in my play I posted is that the defender tipped it. That wipes out the throw-in exclusion.

Lets add one more variation:

 

Throw-in from the sideline. Throw in to the front court where A2 seeing that its about to be caught by the defender slaps it to the backcourt. A3 grabs it in the backcourt.
