A1 has the ball in the frontcourt and passes it towards A2 who is also in the frontcourt near the division line. It goes past A2 and hits the referee who is on the other side of the division line (ie in the backcourt). The ball bounces off of the referee and comes back to A2 who picks it up while still in the frontcourt?

I would think let it play, the only thing is that since the ref is part of the game and in the backcourt it might be blown dead as soon as A2 gets the loose ball.

I am guessing no call. The ball was never lost in the backcourt. Yes it hit off a ref (part of the game) but the team with the ball recovered the ball in the frontcourt.

You make the call..It may suck and be some bad luck but it's a call that has to be made. The ball should be considered dead if it strikes an official and possession goes to the other team. I mean it's not like in football where the ref is in the middle of the play so if the ball hits an official it's likely to be going out of bounds anyway. And I think that's where there is a difference and why it should be considered a dead ball.

I assume you're saying this in response to the ball hitting an official who is out of bounds, correct? If so, what do you tell the coach when he says the ball never actually went out of bounds?

Bingo. The ball attains backcourt status as soon as it touches the official who is in the backcourt. So, offense touched it last in the front court, ball attains backcourt status, offense is the first to touch it - over and back.
