How Tolerant Are You?

Featured Replies

As I have been reading through this forum for the last year, some things have occured to me. It seems that the vast majority of posters on this site are Christians in some form or another. Granted, there are many different denominations represented here, but all basically the same.

Why are there no other religions represented here? Why are there no Hindu, Jehova's Witnesses, Muslims, etc. on here? And, how would you react to them if there were?

According to Christian teachings, one is supposed to love all and be tolerant of all, but could you really do that? If someone posted on here that they were of a different Religion than Christianity, would you accept them or would you shoot down anything they said with your own personal "Christian" view?

I am not accusing anyone of doing this, I am just wondering how everyone feels on the subject.

I'm guessing that there would be a number of members that would display tolerance. I've seen several very encouraging post-election posts from folks that did not vote for President-Elect Obama but that have "put country first" and declared their support and their desire that things go well. Maybe this is a quantum leap, but I'm thinking that the same "tolerance" would extend to the religious arena. On the other hand, I've seen several that aren't quite as encouraging. And let me add that it would be unfair and presumptious of me to assume that "political intolerance" would translate into religious intolerance as well.

As a certain filmmaker that shall remain nameless said the other night on Larry King (and I'm paraphrasing), "And what if he (President-Elect Obama) was Muslim? So what?

Love all... yes. But what is your definition of tolerance? I'm a Catholic and the Catholic Church teaches the principles of ecumenism and religious freedom, but it also teaches the necessity of evangelisation and that there is no salvation outside Christ. What exactly do I have to do, have to tolerate in order to be tolerant?

To me, it would mean understanding that their beliefs are different than yours, and accept that they are not going to agree with your faith. I mean, you can express your opinions, but would you continually try to convert them? Or would you accept that the world is full of all kinds and accept them for what they are? Would it change your view of the person?

What if it were someone that has been on this site for a while. It is finally disclosed that they have different beliefs. Would you personally ostricize them, or still treat them the same way as you did before?

Extremely tolerant, some of the ignorance I see and hear on a daily basis sickens me.

It depends on whether they made me mad.

I can tolerate people as long as they are not trying to put my religion down in the process of voicing the opinions of their own religion. I can listen to people talk about other religions even if I don't agree with it.

Religion is a facisnating subject. Not only the beliefs of different religions, but the history of religious peoples. I'm espcially fascinated by the oldest religions. I find the the influence of religion on history facinating. I'm Catholic, and love my religion, and feel it's THE religion. However, I'm extremely tolerant, religiously. I am extremely respectful, and often awed at the depths of the beliefs of many people I meet, most especially those of non-Christian religions.

If I want to look a friend, or for that matter a stranger, in the eye and say "Hi there, Merry Christmas to you," I'm going to do that. For that matter, if someone from Wal-Mart says, "Happy Holidays" to me, as they are programmed to do now, I'm going to aggressively give them a stern, eye contact, look and say, "Well Merry Christmas." If people want to celebrate quanza and honika (check spelling) that's fine, but I refuse to let them ruin my Christmas.

Kind of petty to make a big deal over nothing don't you think?

 You have much bigger problems if someone saying Happy Holidays to you ruins your Christmas.

^Maybe in your eyes, but it means a lot to me when somebody says, "Hey, Merry Christmas" in a cheerful high pitch tone. And what's the deal with "Holiday tree." Me and my family sat around the old Holiday tree drinking egg nog and talking about how Jesus was born on Holliday. What happened to this country?

I've never heard of anyone calling it a "holiday tree"....And furthermore if you let a silly thing like someone saying "Happy Holidays" ruin your christmas then that is sad to say the least.

And with saying Holidays Americans are trying to appeal to other Americans beyond Christians...is that so wrong?

Americans beyond Christians celebrating Christmas. Wow, it really has gone corporate. This reminds me of the time the Admiral sold a nuclear submarine to a Mr. P.N. Gwin.....without even taking his phone number or address. Shame on him.
