JOE the Plumber isn't really called Joe, doesn't have a plumbing licence, and may not be hurt by Barack Obama's tax plan after all.

 

A new media man-of-the-moment was born. But, by yesterday, the truth was emerging. His hometown newspaper, the Toledo Blade, reported Mr Wurzelbacher didn't have a required plumbing licence and wasn't registered to work as a plumber in Ohio. More to the point, he did not have the money to buy the plumbing business where he now works.

 

And, even if he could buy the business, it was unlikely it would net the kind of income that would place it in a higher tax bracket under Senator Obama's plans.

 

On the contrary, under the Democrat's tax proposal, the plumbing business Mr Wurzelbacher has his eye on might be in line for a tax cut.

When the Media would rather dig up stuff on this man, as to get to the root of both obama/ McCain campaigns equally then America (more the media) has a serious problem. I genuinely feel bad for Joe Wurzelbacher, because he appears to just be a "regular guy" who asked a question (I had earlier thought he might have been a plant by the McCain campaign to create a talking point prior to the last debate but I no longer believe that). Unfortunately, he has gotten swept up in a lively election year discussion and he evidently didn't intend for that to happen.

 

However, I also don't really fault the reporting that Mr. Wurzelbacher A) does not possess a plumber's license and B) has not been paying his taxes. McCain's repeated use of the "Joe the Plumber" story in his debate arguments elevated this man's situation in the national dialog concerning differences between the candidates' tax policies. The McCain campaign has been doing everything it can to paint the $250,000 phase-in point of the Obama tax plan as a large and significant threat to small business job creation, even though it has been pointed out that this element of Obama's plan would effect a very small proportion of actual small businesses (and would be somewhat offset by the $3,000 tax credit element in his plan for creating a job).

 

The newsworthy aspect of Mr. Wurzelbacher's circumstances is not that he is some sort of fraud (no plumber's license, owes back taxes), but that the example so repeatedly and emphatically used as the underpinning of Senator McCain's arguments in the debate was highly misleading.
