Highlands Cannon questions

Featured Replies

As a die hard NCC fan I'm envious of the tradition that Highlands has with their cannon . In another thread it was stated that it was first fired in 1968 . That's 40 years . Now the questions .

1) Does anyone know how many times it has been fired over the years ?

This should be relatively easy to find out .

2) In what game (games was it fired the most ) ?

3) Over the years how many people have served on the crew ? Were there ever any women on the crew ?

4) Have they ever run out of Powder at a game ?

5) And given that it has been fired so many times has it ever had to be be repaired and has it ever been x-rayed to check for metal fatigue ?

Great Tradition at a Great Rival .

I am sure that BOOM is on it. That's a whole lot of data you're asking for right there. I guarantee that someone will come up with all these answers prior to the next time it will be fired which is at around 7 or 7:30 on Friday night.

P.S. Don't forget to factor in all the times that it has been used in send offs for other teams as well. I am pretty sure that when Jamie (Walz) Ritchie played basketball, they shot it a few times for send offs for them going to the tournaments. I also remember a few times that it was shot in excess after a big win. And don't forget the two times it was transported out of the city for away games: Cov Cath and at Ashland Paul Blazer in 92(although they told us that if we fired it, the person that did would be going to jail, and they had about a dozen mounties chomping at the bit to slap on the cuffs). That's a very interesting question as to: Do they keep a log of how many loads are made, used, and didn't work etc. for each game? I will be interested to hear all the stats on this. I am pretty sure that this cannon has been repaired and/or serviced over the years.

I think it also went to Bell County and to the finals in Louisville.

I was getting worried because there weren't many responses to the thread .

When it was first purchased, the cannon went to all games, home and away. Of course that didn't last long. Following that the cannon would stay home except for playoffs and State. Well there were some infamous playoff games were the cannon arrived but was basically held hostage (Bell Co.) So it wasn't long, I'm going to guess the late 70's that it was decided it was best to atleast have the cannon for home games and not push the envelop and take a chance of having it shut down altogether.

As far as how many times it has been fired, I couldn't even begin to guess. It has been fired at a UC game, (and then promptly stollen), it has been to a UK game I believe, and it has actually been fired off on the back of a truck driving thru the town for a state championship post party in the late 60's.

Yes they have run out of gun powder during a game. (don't recall which game) And I must say we have always had a great crew to fire the cannon. I don't know how many we have had over the last fourty years but the turn over rate is not that often. Never had a women on the crew.

Why don't you volunteer to help " man " it sort of like Molly Pitcher only Henry Pitcher :thumb: If a woman can possibly become VP then the barrier should drop in this last bastion of male dominance . JK

The last time it went to Bell, it wasn't fired. The local law enforcement authorities made it clear that they weren't going to look very kindly on it being fired . The Cannon Crew very wisely decided not to fire it. :D It did go to the finals for a while until the KHSAA told the school it was no longer welcome.

No one can accurately determine the number of times its been fired. I know that for a fact.

There has never been a woman in the crew. Women have fired it (heck, Henry has fired it plenty at non football events), but there hasn't been a woman on the official crew. Then again, to the best of my knowledge, no woman has ever asked to be part of the crew.

There was an article in Ft. Thomas Living about the cannon and the crew. I'm sure if someone can dig up the article, the number of people who have served can be easily figured out.

Don't know at what games it was fired the most. My guess is that any answer would be at best, an educated guess because after some important games, it has been fired multiple times and I doubt any one kept track of how many times it was fired.

I don't know if it has been tested for fatigue. As long as the crew is not abusing the amount of powder placed in the barrel ( a warning oft repeated and hopefully heeded), I doubt that there would be any problem. With no projectile being fired, there is little pressure generated in the barrel; nothing close to what it was designed to handle.

Anyone ever give a thought in getting an air cannon and firing it loaded with blue and white confetti at the same time as the big boomer.
