I was just wondering if someone coud tell me who makes these decisions for the schools ? Also does anyone know the total of wins and defeats for Greenup countys coach Sammons.(since he has been at GCHS?)

There are probably subtle differences within each school system, but I would venture to guess it involves a multi-step process engaging several people (an AD, Supt., Principal, School Board, etc.)

The Principal of the high school does the hiring and firing for the high school. At least that is my understanding. But, I assume if the superintendent tells the principle to hire or fire someone, and the principal wants to keep his job, he does it.

No, they don't. The only responsibility site-based councils have is the hiring and firing of principals, as well as some curriculum matters.

In reality it is the principal that hires/fires, but Ive seen places that it could be local politicians, the town barber, or school custodian,LOL!:lol:

I have seen some schools use the SBDM to interview coaches for positions. THen the principal can take their recommendation.

Superintendents, IMO, do have the real say-so. Committees may be formed to include principal, AD, etc., as that makes the process look good, but from what I've seen and heard, the superintendent has the 'real say-so'. Now, of course when it is time to fire a coach, the superintendent 'lets' the high school principal or AD do that!

Obviously, a super is going to have input on any personnel decisions within the district. But the principal, by Ky law, has the final call on the hiring and firing of coaches.

It may be a KY law, but in 'reality' MANY superintendents make the decision and they make sure their principal and AD know who they want.

Guys Superintendents rarely get involved with the hiring and firing of coaches unless it is in small school districts. They have bigger worries than athletics.

However, the building principal, after consultation with the SBDM council makes a recommendation to the Superintendent. By law, the Superintendent MUST ACCEPT the recommendation of the principal. On paper the Superintendent hires, but in reality the building principal makes the decisions in his or her building. As far as coaches go, that decision is based completely by the building principal as its an extra duty position and its on a year to year basis. One gentleman posted that the SBDM council decides that and the firing of the principal. LOL Well, I'm glad the SBDM council doesn't have that kind of power, otherwise you would have total turmoil within a school. Principals have to do something very wrong to get fired.

If a head Coach does not meet the minimum requirements that are in the KHSAA guidelines, and is hired because they were the only applicant. Should that position be re-opened the next year to try to find someone suitable and qualified. This is not a football question but a different sport, and you all seem to know the rules so I thought I would ask.

 

Especially if teachers that are qualified and want the job are hired into the school system.

I can't speak for other areas, but I know the superintendents at Boyle and Mercer (and those aren't small districts) DO get involved in the hiring and firing of their coaches. Yes, they "should" have bigger things to worry about, but in fact athletics is one area they definitey have their hands in.

I understand that this is the way it is 'suppose' to work, but like I said, there are some superintendents that make sure the principal hires and/or fires when directed to do so. The decision should be the building principal's, but in some districts, that just isn't the case. Well... I guess the high school principal could make the decision without going with the superintendent's wishes, but most would like to keep their jobs I'd say. So they're not going to rock the boat.
