How do coaches get Hired or Fired?

Featured Replies

The "reality" of it is, as the losses pile up, the grumbling and complaining of parents and fans becomes louder. Their complaints eventually reach Supts., ADs, principals, and school board members. They, in turn, are "forced" to make changes. Some administrations dig in their heels and refuse to acknowledge the pubic outcry. Others succumb to the pressure.

I can't speak for other areas, but I know the superintendents at Boyle and Mercer (and those aren't small districts) DO get involved in the hiring and firing of their coaches. Yes, they "should" have bigger things to worry about, but in fact athletics is one area they definitey have their hands in.

I understand that this is the way it is 'suppose' to work, but like I said, there are some superintendents that make sure the principal hires and/or fires when directed to do so. The decision should be the building principal's, but in some districts, that just isn't the case. Well... I guess the high school principal could make the decision without going with the superintendent's wishes, but most would like to keep their jobs I'd say. So they're not going to rock the boat.

I hear what you are saying, and I don't disagree with you. I am just saying that if the Principal didn't fire a coach, he or she would still keep thier job. Things are much different now in education than in years past. As I posted above, a principal must do something very wrong to get fired. A Superintendent doesn't have the power to just fire people who don't go along. I have seen Principals go against the will of the Board and the Superintendent. Usually they won't though.

It depends on the school system, whether they abide by KRS statutes, etc. Also depends on the superintendent and if they listen and are swayed by powerful members of the community. I've pretty much seen it all over the years and the one thing that is consistent is that politics usually play a big roll in the hiring and firing of coaches. Some districts don't even follow KHSAA guidelines when hiring coaches, for example Bath County hired a non-certified person as head coach of it's high school softball team even though they had applications from certified teachers in the district, but it was just kind of slipped through and nothing was said.

In oldham county it's the PARENTS that do the firing!

When things don't go their way or their kid is not given a position, they raise a stink until they get it changed.

All you have to do is look at the turnover at all three schools to draw this conclusion!

I was just wondering if someone coud tell me who makes these decisions for the schools ? Also does anyone know the total of wins and defeats for Greenup countys coach Sammons.(since he has been at GCHS?)

GCHS has a new superintendent Hughes his first year at Greenup County. I say he will have some decisions to make after this football season. Alot disgruntled parents last year and seems to be quite of few this year. We just can't help ourselves from having something going on in GC sports.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil!!! The parents have final say so in a round about way by their support or lack thereof. If they are influental in ther town or county you better believe they will have their say.

Well I would say if they are a good coach they would get hired but if they are a bad coach they get fired.:D
